A Yahoo Finance search-result headline dated September 8, 2025 advertised rates “up to 4.45% APY,” but the underlying article could not be accessed to verify the account, term, minimum deposit, eligibility, or early-withdrawal penalty. Treat that figure as an unverified headline, not as a confirmed best rate or market-wide maximum.
What CD rates were reported on September 8, 2025?
The verifiable rate claim tied to that date is limited: Yahoo Finance’s search-result headline said “up to 4.45% APY.” Because the article page was unavailable, there is no confirmed institution or CD term to attach to the number, and it cannot establish which savers qualified or what deposit and withdrawal terms applied. The U.S. Treasury’s official daily table for September 8, 2025, lists a 1.16% five-year real yield. That is a Treasury-market measure, not a bank or credit-union CD APY, so it should not be used as a CD-rate comparison. U.S. Treasury daily real yield curve
Why current CD listings cannot fill in the historical gaps
Rates displayed on current comparison pages are time-sensitive and do not prove what an institution offered on September 8, 2025. For example, a Kiplinger comparison page observed in October 2026 listed APYs from 4.00% for three months to 4.50% for five years. Those later figures must not be presented as September 2025 rates. The same distinction applies to a one-year comparison: its October 2026 page listed Sallie Mae at 4.30% APY, a $2,500 minimum, and a penalty of three months’ interest. Those terms are a later page observation, not evidence of a September 2025 offer. Kiplinger one-year CD rates

A certificate of deposit is a deposit account opened for a stated term. The fixed rate can make the return predictable during that term, but funds may be less accessible: withdrawing early can trigger a penalty that reduces interest earned. If rates rise after opening, a saver may also be locked into a lower rate. Kiplinger CD rates

Before choosing an account, compare the details that determine whether its headline APY fits your situation:
- APY and term: Compare the annual percentage yield for the same or a suitable term, and consider when you will need the money.
- Minimum opening deposit: Check that the required deposit fits your budget and does not leave too little cash accessible.
- Early-withdrawal penalty: Read how the penalty is calculated; it can reduce your earnings if you need to access funds before maturity.
- Eligibility: Confirm whether the institution restricts access by membership, location, or other qualifications.
- Deposit insurance: Verify the account’s coverage directly with the institution and the relevant insurer.
A CD is generally better suited to money earmarked for a known goal date than to cash you expect to withdraw regularly. A liquid savings account is usually more accommodating when access matters. Kiplinger CD rates Kiplinger one-year CD rates
Quick Recap
What to do before opening a CD
- Match the term to your goal. Avoid committing money past the date you expect to need it.
- Read the issuing institution’s current disclosure. Confirm its APY, term, minimum deposit, eligibility rules, and early-withdrawal penalty; comparison-page rates can change.
- Verify deposit protection. Check coverage for the specific institution and account rather than assuming it from a comparison listing.
- Keep the date straight. A current offer is not proof of a past rate, and a historical headline is not a present-day quote.
