Boeing resumed aircraft shipments to China in June 2025 after a tariff-related pause, when a 737 MAX for Xiamen Airlines departed Seattle. That restart is separate from Boeing’s May 2026 announcement of a 200-aircraft commitment: the later commitment was not a report of 200 deliveries, and the aircraft types were not specified.
When did Boeing resume 737 MAX deliveries to China?
A 737 MAX destined for Xiamen Airlines left Seattle for China on June 7, 2025, according to Yicai Global. The aircraft had been expected around mid-April, but the buyer rejected it during the tariff escalation and it returned to the United States. Its June departure marked the resumption of shipments after trade tensions eased.
The interruption followed a sharp increase in U.S.-China tariffs. In April 2025, Chinese airlines stopped accepting some Boeing aircraft. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said at the time that three aircraft were in China ready for delivery and that two had been returned to Seattle; Boeing was considering redirecting aircraft to other interested buyers, as Reuters reported.
On May 12, 2025, the countries announced a 90-day tariff reduction. Yicai reported that China lowered its tariff on most U.S. goods from 125% to 10% and exempted U.S.-made aircraft and certain engines from additional tariffs, while prior rates remained for narrowbody and widebody aircraft. Boeing’s June shipment restart followed that easing.

What is the difference between the 2025 restart and the 2026 commitment?
| Development | What was reported | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| June 2025 shipment restart | A Xiamen Airlines 737 MAX departed Seattle for China on June 7, 2025, according to Yicai Global. | It does not mean that the later 200-aircraft commitment had been delivered. |
| May 2026 commitment | Boeing confirmed a commitment for 200 aircraft, without specifying types; Boeing said the commitment would be formalized through orders from individual Chinese airlines, according to the Associated Press. | It was not a disclosed list of firm 737 MAX orders or a delivery schedule. |
| Reported progress by September 21, 2026 | Air Data News reported that U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said progress was underway on around 150 aircraft: about 140 were in a “good state,” with documentation underway for another ten. | The airlines and aircraft models were still undisclosed; this was not a report that 150 or 200 aircraft had been delivered. |
Ortberg described the 200-aircraft commitment as an initial tranche in comments published by Reuters on May 28, 2026: “It’s a good start. And I’m very confident that keeping that market open, that’s an initial tranche of aircraft, and there will be more to come.” The quote conveys Boeing’s expectation, not a confirmed schedule or additional firm orders.
Are the 200 aircraft all 737 MAX planes?
That has not been established in the reporting cited here. Boeing’s May 2026 announcement did not specify aircraft types, and the September 2026 update did not disclose models or airline customers. It is therefore inaccurate to describe the commitment as 200 737 MAX orders, or to say the 200 aircraft have been delivered.

For context, Boeing’s June 30, 2026 SEC filing listed 4,397 undelivered firm orders across the entire 737 program. That is a program-wide total, not a China-bound count. The filing is available in Boeing’s Form 10-Q.

The 2025 pause was tied to escalating tariffs and trade tensions, not to a new 737 MAX safety grounding. Those are distinct events. The MAX had already been grounded after crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia killed 346 people. Chinese airlines did not resume MAX flights until January 2023, according to the Associated Press. The later tariff disruption affected aircraft acceptance and shipments; it was not the same as the earlier safety-related grounding.

Why the restart matters to Boeing
China has been a significant market for Boeing deliveries. Yicai Global reported that Boeing shipped nearly 200 aircraft to China in 2018—including 181 737s and more than 20 widebodies—equal to one-quarter of Boeing’s worldwide deliveries that year. The same Yicai report said Boeing delivered only 13 aircraft to China between 2020 and 2023, following the MAX grounding.
The 2026 commitment points to renewed commercial access, but its eventual scale depends on individual airline orders being completed and aircraft being delivered. Until customer, model and schedule details are disclosed, the 200-aircraft figure should be treated as a commitment in progress, not a completed sale or delivery total.
