Boeing celebrated its opening on May 20, 2016, and said it had invested more than $1 billion in construction and outfitting at the site. The company framed the investment as a way to sustain thousands of Puget Sound area jobs; that was a stated rationale, not an independently verified count of jobs created or retained.
What is Boeing’s 777X wing factory?
The 777X Composite Wing Center is a Boeing manufacturing facility on the north side of the company’s main final assembly building in Everett. Its purpose was to make the 777X’s composite wings. Boeing celebrated the grand opening on May 20, 2016. Boeing’s opening announcement described the building and its intended role.
The facility had been planned earlier: Boeing announced Everett as its location in February 2014, then broke ground in October that year. The groundbreaking announcement described a planned one-million-square-foot center. That 2014 figure was the planned facility size, not a measure of production or employment.
How much did Boeing say it invested?
Boeing reported investing more than $1 billion in construction and outfitting at the Everett site. That is the company’s reported investment in the facility, not the total cost of the 777X program. The figure should be understood in that limited context rather than as an estimate of the aircraft program’s overall expense.

What did Boeing say the center would mean for jobs?
At the opening, Boeing said the center would sustain thousands of jobs in the Puget Sound area. This was the company’s stated employment rationale for the investment. The cited company announcements do not independently establish how many jobs were ultimately created or retained, or measure the center’s realized economic impact.
Ray Conner, then president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said at the opening, “Today’s event is bigger than celebrating the opening of a magnificent new building,” linking its significance to employees and shared regional success. The comment expresses Boeing’s perspective at the time, not an independent assessment of the facility’s economic effects.

What is the 777X delivery outlook now?
The factory’s opening is a 2016 event; it does not mean the 777X entered service then. In its second-quarter 2026 report, Boeing said it continued to anticipate the first 777X delivery in 2027. That is Boeing’s forecast as of the report, not a guaranteed delivery date. Boeing also said the FAA had approved the program to begin certification flight testing under Type Inspection Authorization 4B. Boeing’s second-quarter 2026 report provides that schedule and certification update.
In May 2026, Boeing reported that the first Lufthansa 777-9 had flown and was preparing for certification testing. The company said production airplanes were also being used to complete certification requirements and prepare for first delivery in 2027. Boeing reported more than 4,700 flight-test hours for the 777-9 test fleet in that May feature; those hours describe flight testing, not factory output. The May 2026 update is a company account of program progress, rather than a regulator’s independent schedule commitment.
