Start by checking what his sport and team require: an athletic supporter holds a cup, but a supporter does not automatically include one, and not every sport calls for a cup. Ask his coach or athletic director if the requirement is unclear, then choose a style and size that fits comfortably and securely.
First decide whether he needs a supporter, a cup, or both
An athletic supporter—often called a jockstrap—is designed to hold and support the groin. A protective cup is a separate item that may sit in the supporter’s pouch or in a pocket in compression shorts. As the Urology Care Foundation explains, “The cup is held in place by an athletic supporter or ‘jock strap.’” Check the product details rather than assuming a cup is included.
Whether he needs a cup depends on the sport, position, and team or league rules. The Urology Care Foundation advises boys in contact sports to wear a cup when they are big enough to fit one, and suggests asking a coach or athletic director when requirements are uncertain. That is general guidance, not a rule that applies to every sport or league. For a noncontact activity such as running, the Foundation says an athlete may use a supporter or compression shorts without a cup.
Sport-specific considerations can vary; Geisinger’s guide to athletic cups and pelvic protectors discusses how the activity affects equipment choice. Confirm current requirements with the team, since local rules may differ from general guidance.

Choose between a traditional supporter and cup-pocket compression shorts
Traditional athletic supporter
A traditional supporter generally has an elastic waistband, a front pouch, and leg straps. Choose this if it suits his preference and the specific garment is designed to hold the cup he needs. The waistband and straps should stay in place without rolling, twisting, or digging into his skin.
Compression shorts with a cup pocket
Compression shorts with a built-in cup pocket are an alternative. Some boys prefer them because they do not have separate leg bands, according to the Urology Care Foundation. Check that the shorts actually include a cup pocket and that the cup fits the garment’s design; ordinary compression shorts may not be compatible.

Comfort is personal. If possible, let him choose between suitable styles and tell you whether anything pinches, shifts, or feels uncomfortable. Have him try the gear on before practice or a game so there is time to correct a poor fit.
Size by measurements and check the fit—not age alone
Youth, teen, and age-based labels are only rough guides. Children mature at different rates, so Cleveland Clinic recommends using waist circumference to choose cup size rather than relying on age by itself. Measure as the product’s chart directs, and compare the measurement with the chart for the exact item you are considering.

- The waistband should feel secure and comfortable.
- Leg straps, if present, should not roll or twist.
- The cup should stay in place without shifting, pinching, or causing discomfort.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for fitting and use.
If the size chart and the fit do not agree, do not force a size based on the age label. Recheck the measurement and consult the manufacturer’s guidance or the team’s equipment contact.
