The CBI case reported in 2017 concerned wire race roller bearings bought for India’s 155 mm Dhanush guns. The allegation was that bearings made in China were supplied by Delhi-based Sidh Sales Syndicate with “CRB-Made in Germany” embossed on them. The reports describe an FIR and allegations—not a finding of guilt—and the available sources do not establish the case’s final legal outcome.
What parts were at the center of the case?
The component was a wire race roller bearing procured by Gun Carriage Factory (GCF), Jabalpur, for the 155 mm Dhanush gun. A 5 March 2018 written answer in the Rajya Sabha said a preliminary investigation indicated that the six bearings came from a Chinese firm rather than CRB, Germany. The Indian Express reported in July 2017 that the bearings were embossed “CRB-Made in Germany,” but information available to the CBI indicated CRB Antriebstechnik had not manufactured them and that they were allegedly made by Sino United Industries (Luyang) Ltd in Henan, China. Those were allegations reported in connection with the FIR, not an independent determination of origin or guilt. The Indian Express, July 2017.
Why did the CBI file a case?
The 2017 report said the CBI registered an FIR concerning alleged false marking and procurement irregularities involving Sidh Sales Syndicate and unidentified GCF officials. It quoted the FIR: “Unknown officials of GCF accepted the Chinese manufactured ‘Wire Race Roller Bearings’, supplied by Sindh Sales Syndicate which were embossed as ‘CRB-Made in Germany’,” the CBI said. The report elsewhere names the supplier as Sidh Sales Syndicate; the quotation reproduces the spelling used in the FIR as reported.

The allegation was that a supplier provided bearings represented as German-made when they were allegedly manufactured in China, and that GCF officials accepted them. An FIR records allegations for investigation; it does not establish that the named firm or any official committed an offence.
What did the reported procurement involve?
The Indian Express account of the FIR described this sequence:

These amounts and delivery details are figures reported by The Indian Express from the FIR account. They describe this procurement, not a broader measure of defence spending or a finding that the bearings failed during gun use.
What did the government say about quality and the inquiry?
The Rajya Sabha answer provides a later official snapshot, dated 5 March 2018. It said an anonymous complaint concerned six wire race roller bearings purchased by GCF, Jabalpur, and that preliminary investigation indicated they came from a Chinese firm rather than CRB, Germany. It also stated there was “no adverse observation” regarding bearing quality.

That statement is not identical to the 2017 report of dimensional deviations found during testing. Neither account, on its own, establishes whether the bearings were safe or fit for service, or whether they failed in use. The parliamentary answer said the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) referred the matter to the CBI’s Economic Wing for further inquiry on the recommendation of OFB’s Chief Vigilance Officer, and that OFB suspended business dealings with Sidh Sales Syndicate.

The available reports establish the 2017 FIR allegations and the government’s 2018 account of further inquiry and suspended dealings. They do not establish a later charge sheet, trial result, conviction, acquittal, or closure. The 2018 answer should therefore be read as a status snapshot from that date, not as confirmation of the case’s ultimate outcome or a current update on proceedings.
