Southwest reported receiving 19 737-8 aircraft through September 30, 2024, but that count predates the strike period. Its year-end results later showed that 36 737-8s scheduled under 2024 contracts remained undelivered. Boeing’s production shutdown and later restart are documented; the headline’s specific handover is not.
What the delivery figures show
Southwest’s October 24, 2024 third-quarter results reported that it had received 19 Boeing 737-8 aircraft year to date through September 30 and continued to plan for approximately 20 deliveries for the full year. Those figures describe deliveries up to the end of the third quarter and a forecast, not a handover during the strike. Southwest’s third-quarter results
In its January 30, 2025 full-year results, Southwest said 63 aircraft contracted for delivery in 2024 had not arrived by year end: 36 737-8s and 27 737-7s. The 36 figure is the number of 737-8s left undelivered from the 2024 contractual schedule, not the number delivered. Southwest included those aircraft among its 2025 contractual commitments. Southwest’s full-year 2024 results
| Southwest-reported measure | Figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 737-8 deliveries received through September 30, 2024 | 19 | Aircraft received through the third quarter; not a strike-period delivery count. |
| 2024 737-8 delivery plan, as reported in October 2024 | Approximately 20 | A company forecast, not a final tally. |
| 2024-contracted 737-8s undelivered at year end | 36 | Aircraft remaining from the contractual schedule, reported in January 2025. |
| 2024-contracted 737-7s undelivered at year end | 27 | A separate model category; not part of the 36 737-8s. |
These are Southwest’s reported figures, not independent estimates of the strike’s causal effect. The different dates and categories matter: a year-to-date receipt count, a forecast, and a year-end backlog do not establish whether any particular aircraft changed hands during the walkout.

What happened to Boeing production during the strike
The machinists’ walkout disrupted Boeing production at Renton and Everett. The Associated Press reported on December 10, 2024 that 737 production had restarted at Renton after more than seven weeks on strike, and that the stoppage had hampered Boeing’s ability to deliver aircraft. Associated Press report, December 10, 2024
Boeing later said it had finalized an agreement with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers and restarted production across its 737, 767 and 777/777X programs. That announcement documents a production restart; it does not identify a Southwest aircraft delivery during the strike. Boeing’s fourth-quarter results announcement

Why the reported schedule does not settle the handover question
Deliveries and factory production are related but distinct events. A production stoppage can disrupt output and delivery capability without, by itself, proving that no aircraft could be handed over. Conversely, a pre-strike delivery count or a later contractual backlog cannot show that a specific aircraft was delivered during the stoppage.
Southwest had also adjusted its MAX delivery timing before the strike. A supplemental agreement filed by the airline in July 2024 amended its 2023–2025 production plan and rescheduled aircraft in the 737-8 and 737-7 tables. That provides context for schedule changes, but does not confirm a strike-period handover. Southwest’s SEC-filed Boeing Supplemental Agreement No. 22
