Interactive Brokers (IBKR) is usually the stronger choice for cost-conscious investors, frequent traders, multi-currency portfolios and access to complex products. Swissquote is often the better fit for Swiss residents who want a Swiss banking relationship, local-market access, straightforward portfolio administration and a more conventional bank platform.
This is not a comparison of two identical account types. Swissquote operates as a banking group with country-specific entities, while Interactive Brokers also serves clients through different regulated subsidiaries. Fees, tax documents, available securities, investor protection and even account eligibility can change with your residence.

Where Swissquote has the advantage
1. It is a bank rather than only an investment platform
Swissquote Bank is a Swiss-regulated bank and securities dealer. That matters to customers who want their investment account, cash account and other banking services handled within a familiar Swiss framework.
For a Swiss resident, Swissquote can be easier to fit into an existing financial life. The practical benefits may include Swiss-franc cash management, local payment arrangements, Swiss corporate-action handling and documentation that is more familiar to a Swiss taxpayer. These conveniences are not necessarily worth paying for if you only need a low-cost securities account, but they can be valuable when administration is the priority.
#1 Best Overall
2. Stronger local-market orientation
Swissquote is a natural candidate for someone investing regularly in Swiss-listed companies, Swiss ETFs or securities traded in Switzerland. It also offers access to international equities, ETFs, funds, bonds, structured products, foreign exchange and, depending on the entity and account permissions, leveraged products and cryptoassets.
That does not mean every Swissquote client receives the same product menu. A Swiss resident, a European client using a Luxembourg entity and a client using another regional subsidiary may see different instruments and restrictions.
3. A more conventional user experience
Swissquote generally presents investing in the style of a full-service bank: search for a security, review its information, place the order and see it in a consolidated portfolio. This can be preferable to IBKR’s more modular system, where users may need to understand account segments, trading permissions, market-data packages, order presets and different applications.
Swissquote is not limited to basic investing. Its advanced trading products and platforms can support active traders. The distinction is that the default experience is usually less intimidating than starting with Interactive Brokers’ professional-grade toolset.
Where Interactive Brokers has the advantage
1. Lower costs for many portfolios
Interactive Brokers is usually cheaper for investors who trade frequently, hold several currencies or buy securities on multiple foreign exchanges. Its pricing tends to separate commission, exchange charges, regulatory fees and currency conversion more explicitly. That can make the bill less intuitive, but it often produces a lower total cost for active users.
Swissquote commonly charges a visible commission per trade, with minimums and, in some markets, additional exchange or third-party costs. It may also charge custody or account-related fees depending on the country and account type. IBKR has historically been more aggressive on commissions and generally does not rely on a traditional custody fee for standard brokerage accounts, although market data, borrow charges, margin interest and other services can still cost money.

Do not compare only the advertised stock commission. For a foreign purchase, calculate:
- the trading commission and minimum;
- exchange, clearing and regulatory charges;
- the bid-ask spread;
- the currency-conversion cost;
- any custody or account fee; and
- the cost of selling later.
For a small monthly investment, a minimum commission can dominate the result. For a large foreign-currency portfolio, the FX charge can matter more than the stock commission.

IBKR offers several levels of interface, including a web client, mobile app, simplified investing tools and its advanced Trader Workstation. It also supports APIs and a large range of order types, conditional orders, algorithmic execution and derivatives permissions.
This is useful if you need options spreads, futures, short selling, portfolio margin, automated trading or detailed execution controls. It is unnecessary complexity if your plan is to buy diversified ETFs twice a year.
One common IBKR mistake is assuming that a security can be traded merely because it appears in a search result. Market-data access, trading permission, product eligibility and settlement currency are separate matters. An account may display delayed quotes while still lacking the permission or data subscription needed to trade or receive live prices.
3. Better support for multi-currency investing
IBKR lets eligible clients hold balances in multiple currencies and convert currencies through its foreign-exchange system. This is particularly useful for investors who receive income in one currency, buy assets in another and do not want the broker to convert every transaction at a retail-style markup.

Swissquote also supports multiple currencies and international trading, but the cost and mechanics of conversion depend on the applicable tariff. Investors should check whether the account converts automatically, whether a separate FX transaction is required and what spread or commission applies.
Fees: the comparison that actually matters
| Cost | Swissquote | Interactive Brokers |
|---|---|---|
| Shares and ETFs | Typically a commission per transaction, often subject to a market-specific minimum. | Typically low per-share or per-value commissions, with pricing varying by region, plan and exchange. |
| Foreign exchange | Usually incorporated into the conversion rate or charged according to the local tariff. | Generally designed for direct FX conversion with a separate low commission and market spread. |
| Custody | May apply depending on residence, portfolio size and account type. | Usually no traditional inactivity fee or standard custody charge, but other service costs remain possible. |
| Market data | Exchange subscriptions may cost extra for live or advanced data. | Many feeds are subscription-based; free or delayed data may be available for some markets. |
| Margin | Rates depend on currency, product and entity. | Rates are generally competitive but vary by currency, balance and account structure. |
| Transfers and administration | Check the local tariff for withdrawals, transfers, statements and special requests. | Check current fees for withdrawals, transfers, corporate actions and market-specific services. |
Swissquote’s exact tariff is especially important because pricing differs significantly between its country sites. Open the fee schedule for your legal entity rather than relying on a global marketing page. For IBKR, also identify whether you are using fixed or tiered pricing and whether exchange and regulatory charges are passed through separately.
Products and investment choice
Both brokers can cover a conventional portfolio of shares, ETFs, bonds and funds. The difference becomes clearer at the edges.
- Swissquote: particularly attractive for Swiss securities, banking products and investors who want a broad menu in one bank account. It also markets forex, CFDs, crypto and structured products, but these may be unsuitable for a long-term investor and may be restricted for retail clients.
- Interactive Brokers: generally stronger for global equities, ETFs, options, futures, currencies, bonds, short selling and professional trading tools. Availability still depends on residence, account type, experience and permissions.
Neither platform should be judged by the largest number printed on a product page. A broker might advertise access to an exchange while a particular ETF is unavailable to a retail client because of local disclosure rules, a missing key-information document, currency restrictions or product permissions.

Fractional shares and regular investing
IBKR supports fractional trading for eligible securities and offers recurring-investment functionality in supported markets. That gives it an advantage for someone investing a fixed amount every month: a CHF 300 or EUR 300 contribution can be allocated more fully even when one share costs more than the contribution.
Swissquote’s recurring-investment options, if available in the relevant country, should be checked carefully for fractional support, eligible instruments, execution dates and fees. A plan that buys only whole shares can leave part of a small contribution in cash. That is not automatically a problem, but it reduces how precisely the account follows a fixed-amount strategy.

Safety, regulation and investor protection
Swissquote clients are protected under the rules applying to the specific Swissquote entity. For Swissquote Bank in Switzerland, client securities are generally held separately from the bank’s own assets, while eligible cash deposits are subject to the Swiss depositor-protection framework and its applicable limits. Those protections do not cover losses caused by a falling share price, leverage or a poor investment decision.
IBKR clients are also covered under the regime applying to their account’s legal entity. A U.S. account with Interactive Brokers LLC may receive SIPC protection, subject to SIPC’s rules and limits. Accounts held through an entity in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Luxembourg, Hungary, Canada or elsewhere are governed by different compensation and insolvency arrangements.

Which broker is better for different investors?
| Investor | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Swiss resident buying Swiss shares and holding CHF | Swissquote | Local banking integration and Swiss-market convenience may justify higher fees. |
| Long-term ETF investor making small monthly purchases | Interactive Brokers, usually | Lower costs and fractional investing can improve regular contributions. |
| Frequent trader or options investor | Interactive Brokers | More advanced tools, markets, order types and pricing options. |
| Investor who wants one familiar Swiss bank relationship | Swissquote | Administration and support may be more valuable than the lowest commission. |
| Investor with assets in several currencies | Interactive Brokers, usually | Its multi-currency structure and FX execution are designed for this use case. |
| Beginner who is likely to be confused by permissions and platforms | Swissquote | The simpler default workflow may reduce setup errors. |
How to make the decision before opening an account
- Confirm eligibility and entity. Enter your country of residence and identify the company named in the application.
- Price your actual trades. Use three examples: a small monthly ETF purchase, a larger foreign-stock purchase and a sale.
- Price currency conversion separately. Compare the cost of converting the amount you will realistically move, not just the advertised percentage.
- Check the securities you actually want. Search for the exact ticker, exchange and share class. An equivalent ETF may not be legally available in your country.
- Read the custody and transfer clauses. Pay attention to annual minimums, outgoing transfer fees, corporate-action charges and closure requirements.
- Decide whether you need advanced features. If you will never use options, margin, APIs or complex orders, IBKR’s depth may be more burden than benefit.
FAQ
Is Swissquote cheaper than Interactive Brokers?
Usually not for frequent trading, foreign-exchange conversion or a globally diversified portfolio. Swissquote can still be competitive for a particular Swiss-market trade or where local banking convenience avoids other costs. Compare the current tariff for your country and account rather than headline rates.
Is Swissquote safer than Interactive Brokers?
Neither brand is automatically safer. Both operate through regulated entities and segregate client assets under applicable rules, but the precise protection depends on the company holding your account, the asset type and whether the broker fails. Investor protection does not cover market losses.
Can I buy ETFs through both brokers?
Yes, both generally offer ETFs, but the available funds depend on your residence, exchange, currency and local disclosure rules. Check the exact fund and share class before opening an account.
Best Value
Which is better for a Swiss investor?
Swissquote is often the more convenient choice for someone who values Swiss-franc banking, Swiss securities and local administration. Interactive Brokers is often better if minimising costs, converting currencies or accessing international markets matters more than bank-style service.
Which broker is better for beginners?
Swissquote is generally easier to approach. Interactive Brokers can also work for beginners using its simpler interface, but the platform exposes more settings and requires more attention to permissions, market data and order types.
Can I transfer my portfolio between Swissquote and Interactive Brokers?
Portfolio transfers may be possible, but eligibility depends on the securities, the sending and receiving entities, registration details and local procedures. Confirm whether the transfer is in-kind, whether fractional shares must be sold and what fees or tax records will be affected.
The Bottom Line
Choose Interactive Brokers if your priorities are low ongoing costs, fractional investing, multi-currency transactions, global market access or advanced trading.
Choose Swissquote if you are eligible for its Swiss banking entity and value Swiss-market access, CHF banking, a more conventional interface and local financial administration.
For most investors, the decisive comparison is not the brand name. It is the fee schedule and investor-protection regime attached to your country of residence, plus whether the platform supports the exact securities and investing routine you intend to use.
