What is KoBold Metals?
KoBold Metals is a mineral exploration company founded in 2018, according to its company history. It describes its evolution from a technology concept into a full-stack scientific exploration business, and says it later expanded into mine development after the Mingomba discovery. That account is KoBold’s own description of its history.
KoBold’s target minerals include cobalt, copper, lithium and nickel. Cobalt is part of a broader critical-minerals portfolio, not the company’s sole focus. Its official science page describes its aim this way: “KoBold turns exploration into a repeatable science.”
Who backs KoBold Metals?
Breakthrough Energy lists KoBold as a portfolio company. Its description connects KoBold’s work to advanced scientific computing and expanding the ethical supply of critical battery materials, including cobalt. The public listing does not disclose Breakthrough Energy Ventures’ ownership percentage or the specific terms or rationale for its investment.

Breakthrough Energy says its Ventures program backs science-driven companies with potential to reduce at least 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions—about half a gigaton per year—across manufacturing, electricity, agriculture, transportation and buildings. That is the program’s stated company-level threshold, not a claim that KoBold itself has achieved that level of emissions reduction or a published explanation of why Ventures invested in KoBold. In February 2025, Mining Engineering reported that KoBold raised $537 million in Series E equity funding and named Breakthrough Energy Ventures among existing investors participating in the round. The report establishes the round size as reported at that time; it does not establish KoBold’s current valuation or provide a complete account of investment terms. How does KoBold use AI to find cobalt?
KoBold describes its exploration approach as a connected workflow, rather than a claim that AI can identify a deposit on its own. The company says it gathers new field and aerial sensor data, organizes geoscience records into a searchable system, and uses predictive models to guide exploration and development decisions.
Collecting and organizing data
KoBold’s science page lists examples of data collection that include RGB, hyperspectral and LiDAR imagery, as well as core imaging. It says its data system brings scattered geoscience information together for analysis. These are descriptions of the company’s system, not independently measured performance results.
Modeling uncertainty and testing targets
KoBold says its predictive models represent uncertainty and are refined with new training data collected by geologists. In practice, this means the models inform where to investigate; fieldwork and new measurements supply evidence that can update the predictions. The company also claims its Hyperpod collects data “10X faster than the industry.” That speed comparison is KoBold’s undated claim on its official science page; the cited materials do not provide independent validation or a side-by-side industry benchmark.

The sources establish that cobalt is among KoBold’s target minerals and that Breakthrough Energy describes its work as supporting critical battery-material supply. They do not establish that KoBold has made a current cobalt discovery or published a cobalt resource estimate. A target mineral, an exploration model or a financing round should not be treated as proof of a defined cobalt deposit.

Evaluating any exploration company requires more than its technology description. Relevant evidence would include data quality and coverage, how uncertainty is handled, field validation, the cost and speed of testing targets, and whether a discovery advances toward mine development. The cited company pages describe KoBold’s approach but do not offer independent outcome data or a comparative industry assessment.
