Boeing said in April 2025 that it planned to redirect aircraft after Chinese customers indicated they would not take some deliveries amid U.S.–China tariffs. Reuters later reported early talks for Air India Express to take around 10 737 MAX jets originally intended for Chinese customers, but it did not report a completed sale. The available reporting does not establish that all 50 aircraft planned for delivery to Chinese airlines were rejected, resold, or even 737 MAX models.
What Boeing said it would do
In April 2025, Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said some Chinese customers had indicated they would not accept deliveries because of tariffs. The Associated Press reported that Boeing had planned about 50 aircraft deliveries to Chinese airlines that year. Boeing said it would redirect supply to customers seeking near-term deliveries rather than continue building aircraft for customers who would not take them. That was a plan, not confirmation that specific aircraft had been sold or delivered to another airline. The Associated Press’s April 2025 report quoted Ortberg describing the company’s intended response.
The reported figure of about 50 refers to planned deliveries to Chinese airlines; the reporting does not establish that every aircraft in that group was a 737 MAX. The separate Air India discussion specifically concerned 737 MAX aircraft.
Did Air India buy the aircraft?
No completed purchase is established in the available reporting. In April 2025, Reuters reported that Air India was in early talks to take around 10 737 MAX aircraft originally intended for Chinese customers for its low-cost subsidiary, Air India Express. The report relied on unnamed sources and described negotiations, not a signed deal or delivery. Reuters’s report also said aircraft configuration differences could affect price negotiations, without detailing the changes.

Keep the separate aircraft deals distinct
| Development | Status in the reporting | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Boeing’s planned 2025 deliveries to Chinese airlines | Some customers indicated they would not take deliveries; Boeing said it planned to redirect supply. | About 50 deliveries had been planned, according to the Associated Press. The report does not identify the eventual buyer or outcome for each aircraft. |
| Air India Express discussions | Early talks reported by Reuters in April 2025. | Around 10 737 MAX aircraft were discussed; no completed purchase was confirmed. |
| BOC Aviation order | Firm order announced by Boeing and BOC Aviation on March 30, 2025. | BOC Aviation ordered 50 737-8 aircraft. This separate order is not evidence that the lessor bought the aircraft intended for Chinese carriers. Boeing’s announcement describes the firm order. |
| Later China-related reports | Separate developments reported in 2026. | They do not identify the final buyer of each aircraft in the 2025 delivery group. |
What later China order reports do—and do not—show
In March 2026, Reuters relayed a Bloomberg report about talks for as many as 500 737 MAX aircraft with China. Reuters said it could not confirm the report and that negotiations had unresolved sticking points. Reuters’s account therefore described reported negotiations, not a confirmed order.
In May 2026, the Associated Press reported that Boeing confirmed a 200-aircraft agreement after the Trump-Xi summit, but Boeing did not specify the aircraft types or provide further details in the AP account. The AP report does not connect that agreement to particular aircraft from the 2025 planned deliveries. Neither development settles what happened to each China-bound aircraft.

What remains unconfirmed
- The exact number of aircraft Chinese customers ultimately declined to take.
- How many of the approximately 50 planned 2025 deliveries were 737 MAX aircraft.
- Whether Air India Express ultimately acquired any of the aircraft discussed with Boeing.
- The eventual buyer, configuration, and delivery date for each aircraft affected by the 2025 disruption.
As a result, it is more accurate to describe Boeing’s response as a plan to redirect aircraft and Air India’s involvement as reported early-stage talks—not as proof that Chinese carriers rejected 50 737 MAX jets or that another buyer took them.
