Boeing says it delivered the first T-7A Red Hawk, aircraft APT-5, to the U.S. Air Force on Dec. 5, 2025. The Air Force reported that it arrived at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph on Dec. 8; its formal arrival ceremony and induction took place on Jan. 9, 2026. The T-7A is an advanced trainer designed to prepare pilots for modern fighter and bomber aircraft—not a fifth-generation fighter itself.
What happened, and when?
The dates describe separate milestones rather than a contradiction:
- Dec. 5, 2025: Boeing reported delivery of APT-5 to the Air Force, along with companion ground-based training systems. Boeing called it the first of 351 aircraft planned for future fighter and bomber pilot training. Boeing’s delivery account.
- Dec. 8, 2025: The Air Force’s later production announcement gives this as the aircraft’s arrival date at Air Education and Training Command. Air Force production announcement.
- Jan. 9, 2026: The Air Force held the formal arrival ceremony at JBSA-Randolph, marking the first T-7A officially inducted at an Air Force base. The 99th Flying Training Squadron, part of the 12th Flying Training Wing, was the first unit to receive one. Air Education and Training Command’s ceremony report.
What the T-7A is designed to do
The T-7A Red Hawk is intended to replace the T-38C Talon in advanced pilot training. The Air Force says it will train pilots to fly fourth- and fifth-generation aircraft; Air Education and Training Command describes training for fourth-, fifth- and future sixth-generation fighters, as well as weapon systems officers. The Air Force rollout account and AETC’s 2025 fact sheet.
That preparation is not just time in the aircraft. Boeing presents the T-7A as a training system combining the jet, ground-based instruction and simulators, and live, virtual and constructive scenarios. Its design includes embedded training scenarios and digital fly-by-wire controls. Boeing says integrated simulation can reduce exposure to high-risk flight hours while retaining training realism; that is the manufacturer’s stated benefit, not a published independent outcome from the first aircraft’s service.

- Revell Plastic Model Airplane Kit #85-5512 is skill level 4 and contains 147 parts. Recommended for ages 12 and up.
- 1:48 scale model, Length 14-1/4", Wingspan 16.75"
- Crew figures and weighted tires. Machine guns mounted in glass nose.
- Decals included to build one of two variants from the 345th Bomb Group, the Air Apaches.
- Molded in light gray and clear. Paint and glue not included.
AETC’s fact sheet describes scenarios involving air-to-air and air-to-ground engagements, high-G and high-angle-of-attack maneuvering, night operations and embedded mission systems. These features are meant to help students build skills relevant to advanced aircraft before moving on to them. The first delivery, by itself, does not establish that operational student training has begun.
How large is the planned program?
The first aircraft is one part of a broader acquisition, and the figures refer to different program descriptions and points in time.

| Figure | What it describes | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 351 aircraft | Planned fleet for Air Force fighter and bomber pilot training | Boeing’s 2026 delivery account; the Air Force’s 2026 production announcement describes 351 aircraft across five AETC bases over the next decade. |
| 46 simulators | Simulators included in the program scale | Boeing’s 2026 account of the 2018 award, which it described as a $9.2 billion contract for trainers, simulators and support. |
| $219 million | Contract for the first 14 aircraft, plus spares, support equipment and training | Air Force’s 2026 production announcement, following Milestone C approval; this is not a per-aircraft price. |
| $19 million | Unit-cost figure | AETC’s 2025 fact sheet, expressed in 2025 U.S. dollars; it is not the $219 million contract divided by 14 and is not a current commercial price. |
The Air Force’s 2026 announcement says Milestone C approval in April 2026 authorized low-rate initial production. That production decision is distinct from completing the planned fleet or demonstrating the training system’s operational results.
What performance figures are available?
Boeing’s program page lists a wingspan of 30.6 feet (9.3 meters), length of 47.7 feet (14.5 meters), an F404 afterburning engine, maximum Mach 0.975, maximum angle of attack of 30 degrees, maximum altitude of 45,000 feet and maximum load of 8G. Boeing labels the performance and flight-envelope figures “Expected Aircraft Performance/Envelope Tested (As of October 2023).” They should be read as Boeing’s dated program figures, not as current operational measurements. Why the delivery matters—and what it does not prove
The delivery moved the T-7A from development toward Air Force service and gave the 99th Flying Training Squadron the first aircraft. At the Jan. 9 ceremony, Lt. Gen. Scott L. Pleus, then acting Air Force vice chief of staff, said, “This is the airplane that we need to get us to the next level.” AETC commander Lt. Gen. Clark J. Quinn called the event “the beginning of a new chapter in the history of our Air Force.” Those were ceremony remarks, not independent evaluations of operational performance. Boeing’s Jan. 12, 2026 account.
The milestone should therefore be understood as an initial delivery and induction, not proof that all planned aircraft and simulators are fielded, that the T-38C has already been fully replaced, or that the T-7A’s training outcomes have been demonstrated at scale.
