The company said it then expected the first 777-9 delivery in 2027. The charge was tied to the program’s revised timeline; it was not described as a $4.9 billion cash payment or as the cost of one isolated defect.
Why did Boeing take a $5 billion 777X charge?
The headline figure rounds Boeing’s $4.9 billion pre-tax charge, disclosed with its third-quarter 2025 results. Boeing linked the charge to its updated assessment of the 777-9 certification timeline. Reuters reported that the charge included costs from extending production and customer penalties; Boeing’s statement identified the revised certification timing as the basis, but did not break down the full charge into those components. Boeing’s October 29, 2025 results release; Reuters’ October 29, 2025 report.
The figure is an accounting charge against earnings, not an announcement that Boeing paid $4.9 billion in cash at once. The available statements do not provide a detailed expense-recognition schedule, so the charge should not be treated as a single cash outlay on the announcement date.
When will the Boeing 777X be delivered?
Boeing said in October 2025 that first delivery of the 777-9 was anticipated in 2027. In its September 2026 program update, Boeing continued to say it was on track for first delivery in 2027, while acknowledging challenges. That is the company’s forecast, not a guaranteed delivery date. Boeing, October 29, 2025; Boeing, September 2026.

What is delaying Boeing’s 777X?
The charge announcement tied the revised outlook to the 777-9’s certification timeline. Boeing’s later updates describe ongoing certification testing and remaining approval work, rather than one publicly identified defect as the sole cause of the schedule change. A longer development and certification period can also affect production costs and customer commitments; Reuters said those factors were included in the 2025 charge.
Boeing president and chief executive officer Kelly Ortberg said in the October 29, 2025 results release: “While we are disappointed in the 777X schedule delay, the airplane continues to perform well in flight testing, and we remain focused on the work ahead to complete our development programs and stabilize our operations in order to fully recover our company’s performance and restore trust with all of our stakeholders.”

Is the Boeing 777X certified yet?
Boeing’s cited 2026 updates describe certification as still in progress; they do not describe the 777-9 as certified or delivered. Boeing reported the following milestones and test activity:
- July 2026: Boeing reported more than 4,800 flight-test hours and roughly 1,700 flights, and said 50% of planned certification testing was complete. It said most Type Inspection Authorizations (TIAs) had been granted, with TIA 5 and ETOPS-focused TIAs still remaining, alongside certification deliverables. These are Boeing-reported figures and status, not independently audited results in the cited material. Boeing, July 2026.
- Second quarter 2026: Boeing said the program had received FAA approval to begin TIA 4B certification flight testing. Boeing’s second-quarter results.
- September 2026: Boeing said testing continued and maintained its 2027 first-delivery forecast. Boeing, September 2026.
How large are the cumulative 777X charges?
Reuters reported that the October 2025 charge brought cumulative 777X-related charges to about $15 billion. That cumulative total is Reuters’ reported figure, not a total stated in Boeing’s cited earnings release. Reuters also identified the Airbus A350 as a competing widebody and noted that delays could create an opportunity for Airbus; that was market context, not evidence that Airbus had already gained a specific amount of business.
