After Dell sold its Software Group, Quest Software and SonicWall were reported to operate as separate companies, while One Identity remained within Quest as a wholly owned part of the business. The distinction matters: the 2016 plan separated Quest from SonicWall, not One Identity from Quest.
What changed after Dell’s software sale?
Dell announced on June 20, 2016, that Francisco Partners and Elliott Management had agreed to acquire Dell Software Group. The portfolio described in the announcement included both Quest and SonicWALL; the announcement records the agreement, rather than independently establishing the transaction’s closing date. Dell’s announcement of the agreement.
In September 2016, CRN reported that Quest and SonicWall would operate as independent companies after the sale. In the same report, One Identity was described as a wholly owned part of Quest. CRN’s September 2016 report.
How were Quest, One Identity and SonicWall related?
| Organization | Relationship described in the 2016 report |
|---|---|
| Quest Software | To operate as an independent company after the Dell Software Group sale. |
| SonicWall | To operate separately from Quest after the sale. |
| One Identity | To remain within Quest as a wholly owned part of the company, not as a separate company from Quest. |
John Milburn, then Dell One Identity’s executive director and general manager, described One Identity as a “sub-company in the Quest Software family.” The report’s description therefore distinguishes two relationships: Quest and SonicWall were to separate from each other, while One Identity was to remain under Quest.

Why were the businesses to operate separately?
Milburn told CRN that the businesses served different customer sets, partner types and product-messaging needs. The report characterized SonicWall as focused on the small and midsize enterprise market and One Identity as strongest among organizations with more than 10,000 users. Those descriptions reflect the 2016 report and should not be treated as current, independently verified market segmentation.
The report also said separate company structures could support different partner programs and business development. Milburn described a planned emphasis for One Identity on channel sales and security-as-a-service offerings. These were reported plans at the time; the article does not establish that particular sales targets or service launches later occurred.

In November 2021, Quest announced that it had signed a definitive agreement for Clearlake Capital to acquire Quest from Francisco Partners. This was an agreement announcement; by itself, it does not verify the closing or establish a complete current ownership chart. Quest’s announcement of the agreement.

Why Dell’s 2012 acquisition is part of the story
Dell completed its acquisition of Quest Software in 2012.
