Boeing Defense Fighter-Unit Head Steve Nordlund: 2024 Retirement Report and Leadership Changes

Breaking Defense reported Steve Nordlund’s retirement and Dan Gillian’s succession to Boeing’s Air Dominance division in December 2024. Later reporting places Nordlund at Oshkosh, but does not establish Air Dominance’s current leader.

Steve Nordlund, then head of Boeing Defense’s Air Dominance division, was reported to be retiring in December 2024. Breaking Defense reported that Dan Gillian would succeed him and that Jamie Burgess would take over Gillian’s Mobility, Surveillance & Bombers role. That was a division-level succession announcement—not a change in leadership of Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) as a whole.

What changed in Boeing’s fighter-unit leadership?

On December 4, 2024, Breaking Defense reported Nordlund’s retirement and the planned succession, saying a Boeing spokesperson confirmed the moves. Gillian, then head of Mobility, Surveillance & Bombers, was reported to be taking over Air Dominance; Burgess was reported to be replacing Gillian in the mobility, surveillance and bomber portfolio. Breaking Defense’s December 2024 report also said Nordlund had spent 15 years at Boeing and joined through the company’s purchase of drone maker Insitu.

This is a historical report, not evidence of a new retirement in 2026. The available reporting does not establish who leads Air Dominance today, so Gillian should be described as Nordlund’s reported successor—not necessarily the division’s current head.

Air Dominance was a division, not all of Boeing Defense

Boeing created Air Dominance in a November 2022 reorganization that consolidated eight BDS divisions into four. At the time, Boeing said Air Dominance covered classified programs, F/A-18, F-15, T-7, MQ-25 and MQ-28, along with non-space Phantom Works programs, including Virtual Warfare Centers. That is the portfolio description Boeing gave in 2022, not a verified current list. Boeing’s reorganization announcement said the change was intended to simplify integration and collaboration and strengthen operational discipline, quality, safety and performance.

Who leads the broader BDS business?

Steve Parker became BDS president and CEO on July 1, 2025, after serving as interim leader since September 2024. Boeing’s appointment announcement described Parker as having 37 years of company experience. His appointment was at the business-unit level; it was separate from the Air Dominance succession reported in 2024. Boeing’s announcement does not establish the current head of Air Dominance.

What happened to Nordlund after Boeing?

An Oshkosh Corporation annual report filed with the SEC in 2026 says Nordlund joined Oshkosh in July 2025 and identifies his most recent Boeing role as Air Dominance vice president and general manager from 2022 to 2025. The filing does not explain how this later move relates to the retirement report, so the circumstances or timing of any change in plans are not established. Oshkosh’s SEC-filed 2025 annual report provides the subsequent employment details.

Later fighter-program news is separate from the succession

Boeing announced on March 21, 2025 that the U.S. Air Force had selected it for the Next-Generation Air Dominance fighter platform. On September 29, 2026, Boeing announced a U.S. Navy selection for the F/A-XX program, intended to replace the F/A-18 Super Hornet fleet. These program announcements provide later fighter-program context; they do not identify Air Dominance’s current leader or connect either selection to Nordlund’s reported retirement. Boeing’s F/A-XX announcement covers the Navy selection.
