It covered two operationally representative E-7A rapid-prototype weapon systems, with Boeing describing the broader scope as including lifecycle development, training and support. The award is not the same as the program’s later, broader cost estimate—and 2026 budget documents changed the program’s outlook.
What did Boeing’s $2.56 billion E-7A contract cover?
The Air Force said the agreement would pave the way for two operationally representative prototype weapon systems. The rapid-prototyping effort was designed to integrate U.S.-based mission systems into existing E-7 airborne platforms, meet Air Force requirements and preserve interoperability with coalition partners already operating the aircraft. The Air Force announcement gives the definitized contract value as $2,560,846,860.
Boeing rounded the award to $2.56 billion and said the contract included lifecycle development, training and support for the U.S. E-7A fleet. In other words, the announced amount was not described as a simple purchase price for two off-the-shelf aircraft.
How should the contract amount be distinguished from other figures?
Later Air Force budget exhibits present a much larger total-cost estimate for the broader E-7A effort. That estimate and the 2024 contract value refer to different things.

What is the E-7A Wedgetail meant to do?
The Air Force describes the E-7A as an airborne battle-management and command-and-control platform with moving-target-indication capability. It says the aircraft’s multi-role electronically scanned array radar is intended to improve airborne battle management and situational awareness, and to support long-range kill chains against potential peer adversaries. Those are stated program objectives, not independent test results. The Air Force’s 2024 announcement attributes these intended capabilities to the program.
Boeing says the E-7 AEW&C aircraft is based on a 737-700 NG airframe and describes it as providing targeted tracking and battle-management command and control. Boeing’s promotional phrase “first to detect, first to engage” is company characterization, not an independently measured result. The Air Force had selected the E-7 to replace a portion of the E-3 Sentry AWACS fleet, describing the need for tactical battle management, command and control and moving-target indication. In 2024, it said the E-3 would remain in use until the E-7A was fielded. The Air Force’s April 2022 selection announcement provides that earlier context.

What changed in the Air Force’s later budget plans?
The FY2027 RDT&E justification, dated 2026, says no FY2027 budget-year funding was requested because the 2026 President’s Budget decision was to terminate the E-7A program. The related FY2027 aircraft-procurement justification says the budget includes no E-7 procurement funding. It also describes $200 million transferred under a FY2026 continuing-resolution provision for continued rapid-prototyping activities.
These statements distinguish FY2026 prototyping funding from the later FY2027 request posture. The budget exhibits establish the Air Force’s stated budget decision and funding plans; they do not establish whether Boeing’s 2024 contract was itself terminated, modified or remains active. The reviewed documents do not resolve the contract’s current legal status or specify what work remains authorized.

Were the original delivery and production dates confirmed?
No. In its August 2024 announcement, the Air Force said the rapid-prototype effort would inform a planned production decision in FY2026 and that the two prototypes were planned for delivery in FY2028. Those were plans stated in 2024, not confirmation of the current schedule. The later budget documents’ stated decision to terminate the program means those milestones should not be presented as current expectations.
