Among the air-cooled miners compared here, the Bitmain Antminer S21 XP is the most efficient on published specifications, at 13.5 J/TH. The S21 Pro and S21 cost less power per unit of hashrate efficiency in that order, while the liquid-cooled S21 XP+ Hyd is a higher-capacity option for deployments with industrial power and cooling. None is a plug-and-play household appliance: these machines draw several kilowatts continuously, and the cited specifications do not establish a universal profitability winner.
How the four Bitcoin mining rigs compare
All four are SHA-256 ASIC miners designed for Bitcoin mining. The S21 family air-cooled specifications below are typical manufacturer values, not guaranteed performance in a particular installation. The daily energy figures are calculations from the stated power draw assuming continuous operation for 24 hours; actual consumption depends on operating conditions and uptime.
| Model | Hashrate | Power | Efficiency | Estimated energy per 24 hours | Cooling and stated constraints | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bitmain Antminer S21 | 200 TH/s | 3,500 W | 17.5 J/TH | 84 kWh, calculated from typical power draw | Air-cooled; 220–277 V AC; 0–45 °C operating temperature | A baseline S21-family option where acquisition cost matters more than maximum efficiency |
| Bitmain Antminer S21 Pro | 234 TH/s | 3,510 W | 15 J/TH | 84.24 kWh, calculated from typical power draw | Air-cooled; 220–277 V AC; up to 76 dBA under maximum fan conditions | A middle ground between the S21 and S21 XP specifications |
| Bitmain Antminer S21 XP | 270 TH/s | 3,645 W | 13.5 J/TH | 87.48 kWh, calculated from typical power draw | Air-cooled; 220–277 V AC; up to 76 dBA under maximum fan conditions | The strongest documented air-cooled efficiency in this comparison |
| Bitmain Antminer S21 XP+ Hyd | 500 TH/s | 5,500 W | Not stated by TechRadar | 132 kWh, calculated from TechRadar’s listed power draw | Liquid-cooled; TechRadar describes an approximately 400 V industrial connection | Professional or hosted deployment with suitable electrical and liquid-cooling infrastructure |
The first three models’ hashrate, wall power and efficiency are from Bitmain’s respective S21, S21 Pro and S21 XP specifications, updated in 2024. Bitmain says the S21 XP’s actual hashrate can vary by ±3%, and its actual wall power and efficiency by ±5%; the listed values are typical, not guarantees. TechRadar’s buyer guide, last updated 3 December 2025, lists the S21 XP+ Hyd at 500 TH/s and 5,500 W and describes it as relatively power-efficient; it does not provide a comparable J/TH figure here. These figures do not establish how much a machine will earn.
Which Bitcoin miner is best for your situation?
Choose the S21 XP for the best documented air-cooled efficiency here
At 13.5 J/TH, the S21 XP uses less stated energy per unit of hashrate than the S21 Pro or S21. That makes it the efficiency leader among these three air-cooled models, not automatically the best financial purchase: the hardware price, electricity rate, uptime and other costs still affect the outcome.

Choose the S21 Pro as the middle specification
The S21 Pro’s 15 J/TH rating falls between the S21 and S21 XP. It offers a middle option on published efficiency and hashrate without the XP’s listed power draw. Whether that trade-off is worthwhile depends on the actual purchase and operating costs available to you.
Consider the S21 if acquisition cost is the priority
Bitmain lists the S21 at 200 TH/s, 3,500 W and 17.5 J/TH. It is the least efficient of the three documented air-cooled choices, but may still be worth comparing if its total purchase cost is lower. The specifications alone cannot show whether that price difference offsets its higher energy use per unit of hashrate.

Reserve the S21 XP+ Hyd for infrastructure that supports liquid cooling
TechRadar describes the S21 XP+ Hyd as a self-contained liquid-cooled ASIC and lists an approximately 400 V industrial connection. Its stated capacity makes it a high-end deployment option, but its electrical and cooling requirements make it a poor fit for a typical room or an installation without suitable industrial service. Hosting may be an alternative where a provider can confirm the required capacity and operating conditions.
Can you run an Antminer at home?
It is possible only if the home installation can safely supply the machine’s electrical load and handle its heat and noise. The S21-family specifications call for 220–277 V AC and 20 A input, requirements that should not be assumed to match ordinary household outlets or circuits. Have a qualified electrician confirm the service, circuit protection and wiring before buying or connecting a unit.

- As Bitmain Antminer s21 200T is first batch, will need 220-277V voltage, so please do not use 110V voltage, it may make the miner defective, include power cords
- Check electrical capacity first. Confirm that the available voltage and circuit can support continuous operation; do not rely on an adapter or an assumed outlet rating.
- Plan for heat removal. A miner converting several kilowatts of electrical power into operation will also release substantial heat into its surroundings. Provide a suitable path for ventilation or other heat rejection.
- Account for noise. Bitmain lists the S21 Pro and S21 XP at up to 76 dBA under maximum fan conditions. That is a specification under the stated fan condition, not a guarantee of the sound level in every room or installation.
- Check the operating environment. Bitmain lists the S21’s operating temperature range as 0–45 °C. Confirm the exact model’s requirements and make sure the installation can keep it within its stated limits.
If electrical work, ventilation, heat management or noise isolation would be impractical at home, compare a suitable hosting facility instead. Confirm its electrical service, cooling arrangement, fees, uptime terms and responsibility for repairs before committing.
How much electricity does a Bitcoin mining rig use?
At the published typical power levels, the air-cooled S21 models use about 84–87.48 kWh over a full day of uninterrupted operation. The S21 XP+ Hyd’s 5,500 W figure corresponds to 132 kWh over 24 hours. These are calculated energy totals, not measured bills or guaranteed consumption; downtime and actual operating conditions change the result.

To estimate the energy charge for a particular period, multiply the miner’s kWh use for that period by your all-in electricity rate. For example, the S21 XP’s calculated 87.48 kWh per uninterrupted day multiplied by a local rate of $0.10 per kWh would equal $8.748 in energy charges for that day, before any other costs. Substitute your own rate; the example is arithmetic, not a rate forecast or profitability estimate.

Efficiency and hashrate are useful comparison points, but they do not answer whether mining will make money for a particular buyer. The available figures do not provide a reproducible, location-specific profitability calculation or a current analysis of Bitcoin price and network difficulty. Avoid treating any model as a guaranteed return.

- Caution: Wrong input voltage may probably cause server damaged.
- Full acquisition cost: Include the miner and shipping, rather than comparing models on hashrate alone.
- Electricity: Use your actual rate and the miner’s expected operating schedule. A continuously running multi-kilowatt load makes energy cost a major part of the decision.
- Operating and site costs: Account for pool fees, downtime, repairs, cooling, facility rent and any hosting charges that apply.
- Resale value and useful life: Consider what the equipment may be worth later and how much uncertainty that adds to your estimate.
- Deployment fit: Confirm the voltage, current, heat-management and noise requirements can be met by your site or hosting provider.
ASIC miners are optimized for SHA-256 and are not readily repurposed for unrelated algorithms. TechRadar notes that ASICs can offer strong return potential but require significant capital, while GPU and CPU systems provide more flexibility. That flexibility does not make a general-purpose computer equivalent to these purpose-built Bitcoin miners; it is a different trade-off for a different use case.
