Direct shares give you exposure to one company; a broad-market ETF adds other holdings but can still allocate a substantial portion to Nvidia. The choice comes down to how much company-specific risk and fund-level diversification you want, alongside each option’s costs and your own account and tax circumstances.
Choose between NVDA shares and an ETF
| Option | What you own | How Nvidia exposure works | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct shares | Common stock in NVIDIA Corporation, ticker NVDA, which the company says trades on the Nasdaq Global Select Market. | Your investment is directly exposed to one issuer. Company-specific developments can affect its value. | Your portfolio’s concentration in Nvidia, the company’s business risks, and whether your brokerage provides access to NVDA. |
| Broad-market ETF | Shares in a fund holding a basket of securities. | Nvidia contributes to returns according to its weight in the fund. That weight and the fund’s holdings can change. | The fund’s objective, current holdings and Nvidia weight, expense ratio, tracking approach, and account-specific costs. |
For direct ownership, NVIDIA identifies its common stock as trading on the Nasdaq Global Select Market. Buying an ETF is different: you own fund shares, not Nvidia stock directly, even when Nvidia is one of the fund’s holdings.
What an Nvidia-holding ETF can look like
The iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) is one example, not a recommendation or the only way to get indirect Nvidia exposure. Its summary prospectus, dated July 31, 2026, says the fund seeks to track an index of large-capitalization U.S. equities. BlackRock/iShares listed Nvidia at 8.07% of IVV’s portfolio in holdings dated September 10, 2026. That is a dated snapshot, not a fixed allocation. The same prospectus reports a 0.03% expense ratio; check current fund documents because holdings and fees can change. See the IVV product page and fund documents.
An ETF can spread exposure across multiple companies, but it does not eliminate Nvidia risk if the fund holds Nvidia. Compare funds by their objective, breadth of holdings, current Nvidia weight, expense ratio, and tracking approach. The cited IVV expense ratio does not establish what your broker may charge in commissions or account fees, nor does it determine your tax treatment or eligibility.

Understand the main risks before buying
Company-specific risk
Owning NVDA makes your investment dependent on one company. NVIDIA warns that risks could harm its business, financial condition, results, or reputation and cause its stock price to decline. Its filings also emphasize that owning or purchasing its securities involves investment risks. The company’s SEC filings provide the detailed, current risk disclosures.
Infrastructure constraints
NVIDIA says the availability of data centers, energy, and capital to support customers’ AI infrastructure buildout is crucial. Shortages in these areas could affect revenue and financial performance. This is a business dependency, not a guarantee of future results in either direction.

Market volatility
NVIDIA’s quarterly filing for the period ended July 26, 2026 describes publicly held equity securities as subject to market-price volatility and directs investors to prior risk factors and the current filing. A fund holding Nvidia remains exposed to equity-market movements as well as changes in its other holdings.
Concentration inside a fund
A fund may own many companies while still having a meaningful allocation to Nvidia. IVV’s 8.07% Nvidia weight on September 10, 2026 illustrates why it is worth checking holdings rather than assuming a broad-market label means negligible exposure. The weight can change.

Costs and personal circumstances
Fund expense ratios are only one cost to consider. Brokerage commissions, account fees, eligibility, and tax consequences depend on the provider and your jurisdiction; the cited fund and company materials do not settle those individual details. Review current provider documents and local tax rules before investing.

NVIDIA effected a 10-for-1 stock split in June 2024. When comparing historical share counts or per-share figures with current ones, make sure they are interpreted on a split-adjusted basis. The split changed the number of shares and per-share amount, not the underlying company by itself. See NVIDIA’s stock split information.

Make the decision in a few checks
- Decide how concentrated you want to be. Direct NVDA ownership is exposure to one issuer. An ETF may add other companies, but verify how much Nvidia it currently holds.
- Read the investment objective. Confirm what an ETF is designed to track or hold; “ETF” alone does not describe its strategy.
- Check current holdings and fees. Use the fund provider’s latest holdings and prospectus rather than relying on an older weight or expense ratio.
- Check account and tax details. Confirm trading availability, any broker or account charges, and relevant local tax rules for your circumstances.
- Review company risk disclosures. NVIDIA’s filings explain risks that can affect its business and the value of its securities. These are disclosures, not predictions of performance.
