Wayne Rooney says he warned Birmingham City’s owners, including Tom Wagner, that the squad could not play the style they wanted—and says he was told to continue before losing his job. That is Rooney’s retrospective account, not independently verified evidence of what the owners instructed him to do.
What Rooney said about Birmingham City’s owners
In remarks from an interview with The Overlap, quoted by Goal on 10 May 2026, former Birmingham head coach Wayne Rooney said: “The disappointing thing about the Birmingham one is, after two or three games, I’ve gone to the owners and said, ‘These players aren’t capable of playing how they wanted the team to play’.”
Goal also quoted Rooney saying: “I was advised to keep doing it, and then, ultimately, I’ve lost my job for doing that.” Rooney’s account describes conversations with the owners, including Tom Wagner, but the quoted report does not independently establish what the owners said or why the club dismissed him. The original interview was not reviewed, so the excerpts alone do not establish their fuller context or the owners’ response. Goal’s report
Why the 2023 appointment was called disappointing
Rooney replaced John Eustace in October 2023, when Birmingham were sixth in the Championship. The Guardian’s January 2024 coverage characterized the move from Eustace to the high-profile Rooney as controversial and argued that the ownership had misunderstood the Championship. That was the newspaper’s analysis, not a stated explanation from the club. The Guardian’s coverage

Rooney’s results at Birmingham
Goal dates Rooney’s appointment to 11 October 2023 and his dismissal to 2 January 2024, an 83-day spell. He won two of 15 matches. The Guardian reported at the time that Birmingham had fallen from sixth to 20th after those 15 matches. Opta Analyst’s February 2025 retrospective also records two wins in 15 games and places the spell within a 2023–24 season that ended with Birmingham’s relegation, despite a 1–0 win over Norwich on the final day. - Performance: Birmingham’s position and results deteriorated during Rooney’s 15 matches in charge.
- Rooney’s explanation: He says he raised concerns early that the squad could not deliver the desired style and was advised to persist.
- What remains unestablished: The available accounts do not independently verify the owners’ tactical instructions, their response beyond Rooney’s recollection, or their motives for appointing and dismissing managers.
The results provide context for the decision to dismiss Rooney; they do not prove or disprove his account of the private conversations. Likewise, Rooney’s explanation gives his view of the tactical mismatch, not an independently established account of the owners’ intentions.
