David Bonderman, co-founder of private equity firm TPG and an owner of the Seattle Kraken, died on December 11, 2024, at age 82. A joint announcement from his family, TPG, Wildcat Capital Management and the Kraken said he died surrounded by family. The Associated Press reported that the announcement did not disclose a cause of death.
What was David Bonderman known for?
Bonderman was best known publicly for two roles: helping build TPG into a major alternative asset management firm and leading the ownership group that brought the NHL to Seattle. TPG’s memorial identified him as its co-founder and non-executive chairman. The Kraken’s announcement described him as a co-founder of TPG and an owner of the team.
TPG characterized him as “A private equity pioneer, legal scholar, conservationist, and citizen of the world.” That is the firm’s tribute, rather than a neutral account of his career.
What was his connection to the Seattle Kraken?
The NHL awarded Seattle’s expansion franchise to the group led by Bonderman on December 4, 2018. The team began play in 2021. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman credited Bonderman with bringing NHL hockey to the Pacific Northwest.

Kraken CEO Tod Leiweke said Bonderman’s interest in the Pacific Northwest, sports and music came together in founding the franchise and rebuilding Climate Pledge Arena with partners at Oak View Group (OVG). The team’s statement placed his role in both the club’s creation and the arena project.
What is known about his background?
The Associated Press reported that Bonderman was born in Los Angeles on November 27, 1942, attended the University of Washington and Harvard Law School, and later co-founded TPG. Those details provide a brief outline, not a full chronology of his career.

How did David Bonderman die?
The joint announcement said Bonderman died surrounded by family but did not give a cause of death. The Associated Press also reported that no cause was disclosed. No further explanation of his death was included in the cited statements.
