Mike Lynch’s body was recovered from inside the sunken superyacht Bayesian on August 22, 2024, three days after the vessel sank off Sicily. The final missing person was recovered the following day. The recovery confirmed the human toll of the disaster; it did not determine why the yacht sank.
When was Mike Lynch’s body recovered?
Lynch’s body was retrieved from inside the wreck on Thursday, August 22, 2024, according to CBS News. The Bayesian had foundered on August 19, about 0.5 nautical miles south-east of Porticello, Sicily, according to the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB).
Rescue teams recovered the final missing person on August 23. CBS reported that formal identification of that person was pending at the time of publication. Seven people died and 15 survived.
What happened to the Bayesian?
The Bayesian sank near Porticello on August 19, 2024. The yacht came to rest on the seabed at a depth of more than 160 feet, at an angle of about 90 degrees, CBS reported. The incident killed seven people, while 15 people survived.

What did investigators say caused the sinking?
In an interim update published May 15, 2025, the MAIB said its desktop study examined the yacht’s stability, likely local weather and the weather’s effect on the vessel. Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents Andrew Moll OBE said: “The findings indicate that the extreme wind experienced by Bayesian was sufficient to knock the yacht over. Further, once the yacht had heeled beyond an angle of 70° the situation was irrecoverable.”
That is an interim assessment, not a final accident determination. Moll said the report “presents a desktop study of the facts as we know them” and cautioned: “The results will be refined as the investigation proceeds, and more information becomes available.” The 70-degree figure describes the point at which the interim study said the situation was irrecoverable; it is not, by itself, a complete explanation of the sequence of events.

Why was the wreck raised?
The yacht was raised in June 2025 and transferred to Termini Imerese for examination. The Associated Press reported that the vessel was made available to investigators after recovery. The Guardian reported that investigators planned a full examination of the wreck to assess factors that may have contributed to the vessel’s safety and to learn more about events on board.
Those reports described the examination planned after the wreck came ashore; they do not establish its eventual findings. The interim MAIB update and the raising of the yacht should therefore be read as steps in an ongoing investigation, not proof of a final cause.
