Ethereum, Cardano, Solana and Polkadot offer different ways to participate, but the available figures do not support a fair ranking by current net yield. Compare the staking method and its terms—not an APR headline—before committing funds.
Compare the staking methods before choosing a coin
Staking generally means helping secure or operate a proof-of-stake network, either directly or by delegating assets to a validator or pool. The mechanics differ by network, so the token with the most convenient route for one person may be a poor fit for another.
| Network and token | How participation works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ethereum (ETH) | Validators deposit ETH; users can also use delegated or pooled arrangements. Ethereum.org says solo validation requires at least 32 ETH and validator operation. | Solo operating requirements, penalties for missed duties, slashing conditions, and any provider, smart-contract or execution dependencies. (Ethereum.org) |
| Cardano (ADA) | Holders can delegate to a public stake pool or operate a pool. Delegation lets holders participate without running a node. (Cardano documentation) | Pool fees, saturation, performance, reliability and reward distribution. Cardano’s developer portal says delegated ADA is never at risk; that statement does not establish a pool’s returns or remove other risks. (Cardano Developer Portal) |
| Solana (SOL) | Solana uses proof of stake, and staking rewards are enabled. Users can stake through supported wallets and validators. (Solana) | Validator terms and reputation, wallet and custody arrangements, and current net rewards and exit terms. Comparable current yield and exit-time figures are not stated in the cited Solana material. |
| Polkadot (DOT) | Nominators back validators and can earn a share of rewards; outcomes depend on validator activity and commission. (Polkadot Developer Docs) | Validator activity, commission and eligibility rules. Following a March 2026 runtime upgrade, Polkadot documentation states a 10% minimum validator commission and a 10,000 DOT minimum validator self-stake. These are validator requirements, not a general minimum for nominators. (Polkadot Developer Docs) |
Choose by your priorities, not by a headline APR
If you want to operate the network yourself
Ethereum solo validation means running a validator, not simply holding ETH. Ethereum.org specifies a minimum deposit of 32 ETH for an individual validator and requires hardware and ongoing operation. Consider whether you can meet the capital requirement and reliably manage the technical duties before treating solo staking as an option.
If you prefer to delegate
Cardano delegation is designed to let holders take part without operating a node. Solana also supports staking through validators, while Polkadot nominators back validators. Delegation can reduce operating work, but it makes pool or validator selection and the relevant commission and reward rules important. For Ethereum, delegated services introduce provider counterparty risk; pooled arrangements can add smart-contract or execution risk, according to Ethereum.org.

If you need flexibility to withdraw
Do not assume staked tokens are immediately spendable. Before staking, check the network’s current exit queue or unbonding rules and, if you use a provider, its withdrawal process and terms. Those timings were not established on a comparable basis for the four networks here. A liquid staking token, where offered, would also have market and provider risks that should be evaluated separately from the underlying protocol’s exit rules.
Work out what a reward figure actually means
A useful comparison is net reward: the protocol reward after validator commission, pool or platform fees, and any other service charges. The sources cited here do not provide same-date, comparable net figures for ETH, ADA, SOL and DOT, so they cannot support an APR leaderboard.

For context only, an Ethereum.org page last updated February 12, 2025 displayed 2.5% APR and 43,462,468 ETH staked. Those are dated page figures, not a current yield or current total. Reward rates and participation levels can change; check the network or provider’s current terms and note when its figures were updated before relying on them.

Token-price risk
Rewards are paid in a network token. Even if the number of tokens you receive increases, a change in that token’s market price can reduce the value of your holdings. Protocol reward figures do not measure that price risk.

Protocol penalties and validator performance
Ethereum documents penalties when validators miss duties and slashing for specified misconduct. As Ethereum.org puts it, “Validators that fail to perform their duties are penalized.” On Cardano and Polkadot, pool or validator performance and operating rules affect reward outcomes; read the current terms for the pool or validator you select.
Third-party and pool risks
When a service or pool participates on your behalf, identify who controls the assets and keys, what fees apply, and what happens if the provider, validator or smart contract fails. A delegation or pooling interface does not make those dependencies disappear.

A practical pre-staking checklist
- Confirm the route: identify whether you are running a validator, delegating to one, or using a pool or provider.
- Check control and custody: establish who controls the assets, validator keys and withdrawal keys, and what contracts or intermediaries are involved.
- Calculate net rewards: use current protocol and provider terms, subtracting commissions and fees. Treat an APR as an estimate with a date and stated assumptions, not a guaranteed return.
- Review penalties and eligibility: read the current network rules and validator terms, including activity requirements and any minimums that apply to the particular role.
- Verify exit access: confirm protocol unbonding or exit-queue rules and provider withdrawal conditions before staking funds you may need soon.
- Recheck at decision time: network parameters and provider terms can change. For example, Polkadot’s March 2026 runtime upgrade changed documented validator commission and self-stake requirements.
