Google Frightgeist ranked costumes by the growth in U.S. search interest—not by total searches, sales, or what people ultimately wore—so this is a historical snapshot of what caught attention that year, not a current shopping or availability list.
How Google defined the 2024 costume trends
Google Frightgeist compared U.S. Google search interest in September 2023 with September 2024 and ranked costumes by the biggest year-over-year increases. Smithsonian Magazine reported the resulting top 25. A high position therefore signals rising interest, not necessarily that a costume was more popular overall than every unlisted option or that it sold well. Smithsonian’s report of Google Frightgeist’s 2024 ranking is the source for the list below.
Google’s separate Canada-focused commentary described a mix of familiar Halloween figures, nostalgia, viral trends, pop culture, and DIY. That context applies to Google’s Canadian observations, not as a substitute for the U.S. ranking. That variety makes the ranking a useful source of ideas, but not a one-size-fits-all recommendation for every group or location.

A practical interpretation is to look for green-and-yellow athletic apparel and build the outfit around its most recognizable visual elements; the evidence does not establish a specific licensed Raygun costume or current retailer listing. For other characters on the list, think in terms of components—clothing, character accessories, and DIY materials—rather than assuming there is a ready-made licensed costume for sale. Check a retailer’s current product page for size, price, stock, and delivery estimates before ordering; none of those details follow from a 2024 trend ranking.

Choosing between a ready-made look and DIY
Compare the complete outfit rather than only its headline item. A ready-made costume may reduce assembly time, while separate apparel and accessories can give more flexibility; which costs less depends on current prices and what you already own. Check these practical points before committing:
- Total cost: Add clothing, accessories, materials, shipping, and any required alterations.
- Fit and size range: Confirm measurements and the retailer’s return terms rather than relying on a costume label alone.
- Recognizability: Identify the key colors, silhouette, or accessory that makes the character or reference clear.
- Time: Include shopping, delivery, and assembly time, especially for a DIY version.
- Local relevance: National search trends may not match the interests of your city or group.
- Group plans: Decide whether one look needs to work on its own or coordinate with a themed group costume.
A 2024 Goodwill Industries International survey provides context for why some people might favor making a costume. It found that 57% of respondents said inflation made them more likely to create DIY Halloween costumes, and 57% said they were more likely to buy DIY costume or décor materials from thrift stores to reduce costs. Among respondents who preferred DIY, 66% preferred shopping in-store for materials and 17% preferred shopping online. These figures are survey responses, not proof that DIY was cheaper or that those preferences describe shoppers today. The online poll was conducted by Big Village from August 19–23, 2024, with 2,018 self-selected adults; responses were weighted by age, gender, geographic region, race, and education. How the 2024 ideas reflected different costume preferences
In the same Goodwill survey, 29% preferred pop-culture characters from TV, movies, games, or books; 23% preferred classic Halloween costumes such as witches, ghosts, zombies, or werewolves; 23% preferred unique, one-of-a-kind costumes; and 11% planned to dress a pet. These are reported preferences from the survey, not shares of costume sales. The numbers help explain why a trend list can coexist with enduring classics and personal or homemade choices.
For a trend-led costume, consider whether the reference is recognizable to the people you will see and whether it suits your setting. A national U.S. list is a starting point, not a guarantee that every idea will resonate locally; Google’s trend materials note geographic variation.
