How Falabella Built Its Own Commerce Platform in the Cloud

Falabella’s 2021 platform rebuild aimed to replace a monolithic legacy ecommerce system with shared microservices and business-specific flexibility. Later announcements show continuing commerce priorities, not a verified current architecture.

Falabella’s reported cloud-commerce project was a platform rebuild, not a simple move of its old software into the cloud. In accounts published in 2021, the retailer described replacing a long-running Oracle ATG estate with a custom, open-source microservices platform designed to share core capabilities across its businesses while allowing different brands to adapt the customer experience.

Why Falabella chose to rebuild

Falabella operated multiple retail brands and digital storefronts, including Sodimac, Tottus and Mallplaza. A 2021 CIO report said the group had 25 brand websites and had used Oracle ATG for ecommerce for more than 12 years. Those are historical figures from that report, not a current count of sites or systems.

The challenge was not only where to host the old platform. The CIO account described the operational burden of a large monolithic system and the difficulty of simply moving ATG to a public cloud. Falabella instead opted to design a custom platform with open-source software and homegrown microservices. As engineering leader Vinayak Raichur put it, the aim was not merely to shift ATG to the cloud, but to build a custom solution.

How the reported platform was organized

The 2021 account described two layers: shared technology capabilities managed centrally, and a flexible business layer that could accommodate the needs of individual group businesses. The shared capabilities were reported to include:

  • Search and catalogue
  • Orders and customer service
  • Pricing and inventory
  • Shipping

This design sought to avoid rebuilding foundational functions separately for every brand while preserving room for different business requirements. The reporting does not quantify whether it reduced costs or improved performance compared with ATG.

Cloud, services and storefront technology

CIO reported that the ecosystem was hosted on Google Cloud and described a headless microservices system built on Kubernetes. The front end used React server-side rendering, and the reported technology stack included Java, Node.js and Go. The account said more than 150 IT team members worked on the project, with Falabella retaining decisions about the architecture blueprint and selecting Thoughtworks as its implementation partner. These details describe the project as reported in 2021; they are not a current inventory of Falabella’s production systems.

Thoughtworks’ case study says its work began with a three-month discovery that produced an ecommerce product blueprint and developed into a digital retail backbone. It characterizes the platform as cloud-native, multi-tenant, API-driven, headless and based on domain-driven design, with an event-driven architecture. Those are the implementation partner’s descriptions of the engagement.

Why a shared commerce backbone mattered beyond websites

The platform story also touched physical retail. Thoughtworks connected the digital backbone to store modernization efforts including handheld devices, self-checkout, mobile point of sale and scan-and-go. The broader aim was to support commerce across channels, rather than treat the website as an isolated system.

Falabella’s 2022 annual report described a wider set of platforms—ecommerce, payments, digital banking, loyalty and delivery—built on microservices and API connections. It also said components of a modern cloud-based Home Delivery platform launched in 2022 to handle inventory, availability and order orchestration, with logistics services for IKEA and marketplace sellers. This provides dated company context, but does not establish the exact architecture deployed today. Falabella 2022 Annual Report

The commerce platform is not the same as Falabella’s data platform

Falabella’s commerce software should be distinguished from related data and analytics work described in a Google Cloud customer case study. That account says Grupo Falabella decided in 2019 to consolidate its data ecosystem on Google Cloud and began a data lake for the ecommerce platform in January 2021. It names:

  • BigQuery for analytical databases and Looker for reporting
  • Google Kubernetes Engine for deploying and scaling website applications
  • Cloud Storage for unstructured data
  • Cloud Run to reduce service operations
  • Pub/Sub for messaging

These services belong to the cloud and data account; their presence does not by itself establish the architecture of every part of the core commerce platform. Google’s case study also reports that Looker report output rose from five to 25 reports per sprint and that users of Google Cloud tools grew by 300%. The page does not clearly date the measurement period, and these are vendor-reported results about reporting and tool use—not independent measures of overall commerce-platform productivity or customer growth.

What later business updates do—and do not—show

Falabella’s June 2025 Seller Day announcement said first-quarter online GMV rose 17%, with sellers contributing 74% of that growth, and noted that more than 450 brands attended the event. These are company-reported business and event figures, not technical performance measurements. The announcement highlighted technology infrastructure, logistics efficiency and brand support as ecommerce challenges. Falabella Seller Day 2025

A 2026 company announcement discusses omnichannel strategy and a new business-to-business unit, but does not publish the current commerce platform’s technical design. Falabella Seller Day 2026

Accordingly, the clearest evidence for the custom architecture is the 2021 reporting. Later updates show that ecommerce, sellers and omnichannel operations remain business priorities; they do not verify that the original design is still deployed unchanged.
