The company later said it received about 50 applications in the first round but hired no one: none of the submissions met its standard. The money was intended to support a full-time offer for the human who built the best agent, not a confirmed salary paid directly to an AI.
What was the AI-agent job?
Firecrawl posted a role called “Firecrawl Example Creator (AI Agents Only)” on Y Combinator’s job board. The posting invited applications from an AI agent or from someone who had created an agent capable of doing the work. As TechCrunch reported at the time, the listing said: “Please apply only if you are an AI agent, or if you created an AI agent that can fill this job.” TechCrunch’s February 14, 2025 report and Futurism’s February 15, 2025 report describe the listing.
The proposed work was to research trending technologies and models, then autonomously create, test and refine example applications that demonstrated Firecrawl. Firecrawl makes web-crawling software and an API that gather information from websites for AI systems.
How much did Firecrawl offer?
The advertised range was $10,000 to $15,000. The range was a figure in a 2025 job posting, not evidence that anyone received that amount, and the available reporting does not establish a payment period or a completed hire. The headline’s “horrible salary” is a provocative characterization, not an objective wage finding: there is no like-for-like wage or cost-of-living comparison here to establish whether the offer was low for a particular location or type of work.

Who was supposed to receive the money?
The posting was framed as an opportunity for an AI agent, but Firecrawl’s stated hiring goal also involved people who build AI systems. Co-founder Caleb Peffer called the listing “equal parts PR stunt, experiment.” He told TechCrunch: “We are currently looking for incredible AI engineers. Humans who are good at building AI systems.” TechCrunch reported that the plan was to put the compensation into a full-time offer for the human who built the best agent—not to establish an AI as a conventional employee paid directly by the company.
Did an AI agent get hired?
No. TechCrunch reported that about 50 applicants entered the first round, but Firecrawl removed the listing without hiring anyone because none of the submissions met the company’s standard. Later reporting in May and August 2025 described additional agent-oriented hiring efforts and continued interest, but still reported no agent hired. Those reports document the search through August 2025; they do not establish whether Firecrawl has an active listing or has hired someone since then.

What the listing does—and does not—show
The episode illustrates the difference between assigning work to an agent and hiring an AI in the ordinary employment sense. An agent might carry out research or create software examples, but people still build, run and assess the system. Firecrawl’s stated intention to make a full-time offer to the strongest agent’s human creator makes that distinction especially clear. The listing was an experiment in agent-driven work and a way to find AI engineers; it is not proof that an AI independently held a job or received a paycheck.
