Ilya Lichtenstein was sentenced on November 14, 2024, to 60 months in federal prison for his role in a money-laundering conspiracy arising from the 2016 Bitfinex hack. The sentence is for the laundering conspiracy; the hack and theft were the source of the proceeds. He was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release after prison, according to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).
How long was the Bitfinex hacker’s sentence?
Lichtenstein received a 60-month federal prison sentence—five years—on November 14, 2024, in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. The DOJ described the conviction as Lichtenstein’s involvement in a money-laundering conspiracy connected to the hack. The court also ordered three years of supervised release to follow his prison term.
The sentence announced in 2024 is a sentencing outcome, not confirmation of his custody or release status today. The cited DOJ announcement does not establish his current status.
What happened in the 2016 Bitfinex hack?
In August 2016, Bitfinex, a global cryptocurrency exchange, was hacked and bitcoin was transferred without authorization. The DOJ’s sentencing announcement describes the theft as approximately 120,000 bitcoin; it specifies that 119,754 bitcoin were moved in more than 2,000 transactions to a wallet under Lichtenstein’s control. The DOJ says he deleted access credentials and log files after the transfers.

Who was involved, and what did they plead guilty to?
Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan were arrested in February 2022 and pleaded guilty on August 3, 2023. Both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering. The DOJ’s 2023 announcement also says Morgan pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the United States. The charges and pleas should not be confused with a separate finding that the two received identical sentences.

The DOJ’s 2023 release said the money-laundering conspiracy charge carried a maximum penalty of 20 years for Lichtenstein, while each of Morgan’s two counts carried a maximum of five years. Those were statutory maximums described in that announcement, not the sentence Lichtenstein ultimately received. At the time of its November 14, 2024 announcement, DOJ said Morgan was scheduled to be sentenced on November 18; that release does not state her eventual sentence.
How did investigators recover the bitcoin?
According to the DOJ’s August 2023 announcement, the government seized approximately 95,000 bitcoin from wallets under the defendants’ control by the time of their February 2022 arrests. DOJ valued those funds at approximately $3.6 billion at the time of seizure. The same announcement reported approximately $475 million more seized after the arrests and tied to the hack.

These are historical figures reported by DOJ in 2023, not current market valuations. The amount stolen, the amount seized, and the dollar value at the time of seizure measure different things; the figures should not be added or treated as a present-day estimate of the bitcoin’s value.
