Biotechnology is not one market with one growth rate. Healthcare and medicine (“red” biotech) account for most revenue and investment in the broad market definition used by the OECD, while agricultural (“green”) and industrial (“white”) applications are expanding from a smaller base. The opportunity is real but uneven: headline market forecasts are estimates, and a promising scientific idea still has to clear evidence, regulatory, financing and manufacturing hurdles before it becomes a durable business.

What counts as the biotech market?

Biotechnology applies biological systems, organisms or processes to make products and solve problems. The OECD’s 2026 report uses three broad categories:

Subsector What it covers Commercial lens
Red biotechnology Healthcare and medicine, including biopharmaceuticals and advanced therapies. It holds most current revenues and investment in the broad market definition cited by the OECD. Development can depend on clinical evidence, regulatory review and specialized manufacturing.
Green biotechnology Agriculture and related applications, including biological approaches to crops and sustainability. Its opportunity is tied to whether a product can demonstrate practical value in agricultural settings and reach users through viable routes to market.
White biotechnology Industrial processes and manufacturing that use biological systems. Commercial prospects depend on whether a biological process can be scaled and used reliably in production.

These categories overlap in places, and market publishers may define the boundaries differently. A figure for “biotechnology” therefore does not necessarily describe the same set of products, companies or revenues as another publisher’s figure.

How large is the market, and how should forecasts be read?

The OECD’s 2026 sector report attributes an estimated global biotech market value of approximately USD 1.6 trillion in 2024 to Grand View Research (2024), and cites projections of around USD 4 trillion by 2030 and potentially more than USD 5.7 trillion by 2034 from Grand View Research (2024) and Precedence Research (2025). These are third-party estimates and projections, not a directly observed or harmonized OECD market census. Their size and growth implications depend on each publisher’s definition and assumptions.

Use these numbers as broad signals of the sector’s scale, not as a precise forecast of sales, company value or investor returns. A market forecast does not establish that a particular subsector, company or product will grow at the same rate. Before comparing two estimates, check what each includes, the base year, the forecast period and whether the figure represents revenue, investment or another measure.

Where are the market and investment concentrated?

The regional figures below measure different things and cover different years. Market share is an estimate of market value; venture funding is money raised by firms. They should not be read as comparable rankings or as a time series.

Measure Geography Reported figure Attribution and qualification
Share of global biotech market value, 2025 United States About 35% MERICS (2025), as cited by the OECD (2026); an attributed estimate, not an official national account.
Share of global biotech market value, 2025 Europe 31% MERICS (2025), as cited by the OECD (2026); an attributed estimate, not an official national account.
Share of global biotech market value, 2025 China Approximately 5% MERICS (2025), as cited by the OECD (2026); an attributed estimate, not an official national account.
Biotech venture funding, 2023 United States USD 56.8 billion Drug Discovery Trends (2024), as cited by the OECD (2026).
Biotech venture funding, 2023 China USD 20.6 billion Drug Discovery Trends (2024), as cited by the OECD (2026).
Biotech venture funding, 2023 Europe USD 11.5 billion; just over 7% of the global total Drug Discovery Trends (2024), as cited by the OECD (2026).

The OECD report focuses on the EU sector, SMEs, investment and red- and green-biotechnology foresight; it does not provide a global census. The estimates above can help frame regional scale and capital access, but do not by themselves establish which location offers the best prospects for an individual company or investor.

Which growth opportunities merit attention?

The National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology (NSCEB), in its April 2025 report Charting the Future of Biotechnology, frames biotechnology coupled with AI as strategically important. Its opening message, signed by Chair Senator Todd Young and Vice Chair Dr. Michelle Rozo, says: “Emerging biotechnology, coupled with artificial intelligence, will transform everything from the way we defend and build our nation to how we nourish and provide care for Americans.” That is a statement of the commissioners’ strategic view, not a measured market forecast.

The NSCEB’s priorities identify areas for policy attention and potential commercial development. They are not evidence that every theme will produce high financial returns.

  • AI and biological data: The strategic case is to connect computational tools with biological information. Commercial value depends on whether a specific product or workflow can deliver useful results, rather than on the presence of AI in a company’s marketing.
  • Biomanufacturing and scale-up: Biological products must be made consistently at the scale and quality their intended use requires. A promising research result is not, by itself, proof that manufacturing can meet commercial needs.
  • Commercialization and private capital: Moving from research to a product can require sustained funding and a credible route to adoption. The funding figures above describe historical regional venture totals, not the amount available to any one company or its likelihood of success.
  • Workforce and international competition: The NSCEB treats talent and national competitiveness as strategic priorities. These are policy considerations, not direct measures of company revenue growth.
  • Healthcare, agriculture and industrial applications: The OECD’s red, green and white framing is a reminder to assess each application on its own customers, evidence and route to market rather than extrapolating from healthcare’s larger current share.

What separates a credible commercial opportunity from a large forecast?

For a household investor or anyone assessing a biotech business, evaluate the specific opportunity across several dimensions. The same headline market estimate can conceal very different risks depending on the product and stage.

Rank #4
  1. Identify the subsector and customer. Decide whether the application is red, green or white biotech, then identify who would pay for it and what problem it addresses.
  2. Check the company’s development stage. Distinguish research-stage work from a product with clinical evidence, regulatory progress, commercial customers or established sales. Do not treat these stages as interchangeable.
  3. Examine the evidence for the modality. Ask what has actually been demonstrated for the specific product, in what setting and at what stage. Sector-wide enthusiasm or a large addressable-market claim cannot substitute for product evidence.
  4. Map the regulatory pathway. Requirements depend on product type and jurisdiction. In the United States, FDA guidance can clarify the agency’s current thinking, but guidance generally does not itself create legally enforceable responsibilities unless a statute or regulation is cited.
  5. Assess chemistry, manufacturing and controls (CMC). Consider whether the product can be made with appropriate quality and consistency, and whether the manufacturing approach can scale. This is particularly important for complex therapies, but the underlying commercial question applies across biotech.
  6. Match the time horizon to the evidence. A research-stage program and an established product are not equivalent near-term opportunities. The further a forecast reaches beyond demonstrated evidence, the more uncertainty it carries.
  7. Separate market growth from financial outcomes. Even a growing market does not guarantee that a company captures sales, finances development successfully or produces returns for shareholders.

Why cell and gene therapy forecasts need a development reality check

Cell and gene therapies illustrate why scientific promise and commercial readiness are separate questions. FDA’s May 2026 final guidance describes circumstances in which CMC flexibilities may be appropriate for these products while they are under development for biologics license applications; it retains applicable statutory and regulatory requirements. The guidance is not a blanket exemption from manufacturing standards.

FDA’s August 2026 final FAQ covers regulatory review, CMC, toxicology, clinical development and clinical pharmacology for cell and gene therapy products. Together, these documents show that development involves more than demonstrating a biological effect: manufacturing controls, safety evaluation, clinical development and review all matter. FDA guidance describes the agency’s current thinking and should be read alongside applicable laws and regulations.

Evidence also continues after approval. FDA’s September 2025 postapproval methods document is draft guidance, explicitly not for implementation. It reflects the agency’s view that monitoring is important because these products may have long-lasting effects and approval trials generally include limited numbers of participants. It is not a new binding rule.

What this means for personal-finance decisions

Biotechnology market analysis can inform research, but the market-level figures here are not a basis for assuming a particular investment will succeed. The broad category combines subsectors, company stages and regulatory paths with materially different uncertainties. For a personal financial decision, distinguish a diversified exposure from a concentrated bet on one company or therapeutic program, and consider how a loss would affect your broader finances. This is general information, not individualized investment advice.

For further analysis, the OECD’s 2026 sector report offers a view of EU biotech, SMEs and investment; the NSCEB’s April 2025 report focuses on U.S. strategy and competitiveness; and BIO’s Industry Analysis Reports catalog lists resources on emerging-biotech investment, deals, pipelines, clinical development and approvals. These sources answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable forecasts.
