Birmingham City announced on 16 January 2025 that Garry Cook had stepped down as chief executive and board member, citing personal reasons. Jeremy Dale took over on an interim basis and was appointed permanent CEO on 24 June 2025. The announcement is a 2025 event, not a new departure.
Why did Garry Cook leave Birmingham City?
The club said Cook stepped down for “personal reasons.” The BBC’s report of the announcement did not provide a more specific explanation, so claims that he left because of a dispute, health issue or another private circumstance are not established.
Cook became CEO after Knighthead took over Birmingham City in July 2023. Chairman Tom Wagner praised his contribution to that involvement. The BBC quoted Wagner as saying: “The instrumental role he played in Knighthead becoming involved in Birmingham City should never be forgotten.”

Jeremy Dale’s interim appointment
When Cook stepped down, former Microsoft executive Jeremy Dale was to assume the interim CEO role. The BBC described Dale as someone who helped broker Knighthead’s 2023 takeover of the club.

Dale’s permanent appointment
Birmingham City appointed Dale permanent CEO on 24 June 2025. That appointment followed the interim handover announced in January; it was a later development, not part of the original announcement.
When did Cook leave the board?
The club announcement was made on 16 January 2025. Companies House records Cook’s director appointment as ending on 12 January 2025, and the termination filing was lodged on 28 January 2025. These are three distinct dates: the recorded end of the appointment, the public announcement and the filing date.

Did Cook leave Birmingham City completely?
Not according to the January 2025 report. It said Cook would remain connected through the club’s Advisory Committee and continue as a trustee of Birmingham City Foundation. The report does not establish whether either affiliation continued after that period.

Dale’s permanent appointment was reported on 24 June 2025. The sources cited here do not verify who holds the CEO role on 8 October 2026, or whether Cook’s reported affiliations continued. The January departure and June appointment should therefore be treated as the confirmed timeline, not as proof of the club’s current leadership.
