Himalayan Tartary buckwheat is an ancient, bitter-tasting crop that Big Bold Health has turned into flour, sprout powder, and supplements marketed around immune health. But the evidence for the company’s products is still uneven: a small 2024 study tested a multi-ingredient supplement without a control group, while a larger study cited by the company has not been independently verified here. For consumers, the practical question is whether the product and its price make sense—not whether a biomarker change proves stronger immunity.
What is Himalayan Tartary buckwheat?
Himalayan Tartary buckwheat (HTB) is a flowering plant native to northern China and related to common buckwheat. GeekWire reported in August 2024 that it is more bitter than common buckwheat and can grow at higher altitudes. Like other plants, it contains polyphenols—compounds that help plants respond to infection and environmental stress. There is no recommended daily dose of polyphenols, and their presence in a food does not by itself show that an HTB supplement improves human immune function. GeekWire’s 2024 report
Big Bold Health founder Jeffrey Bland built a business around the ingredient and its potential health applications. The company sells HTB in different forms, but these products should not be treated as interchangeable: flour is a food, sprout powder is a single-ingredient product, and HTB Rejuvenate is a multi-ingredient supplement.
What does Big Bold Health sell?
The company’s current product pages list three HTB products: flour, HTB Activ sprout powder, and HTB Rejuvenate. Its broader line also includes fish-oil and probiotic products. On company pages accessed in 2026, listed starting prices were $25.46 for flour, $44.20 for HTB Activ sprout powder, and $66.94 for HTB Rejuvenate. What did the 2024 human study find?
A 2024 preprint describes a virtual, prospective study in which 50 generally healthy adults took HTB Rejuvenate for 90 days. It was open-label and single-arm: participants knew what they were taking, and there was no comparison group. The primary objective was to assess epigenetically measured immune-age outcomes and immune-related assays. 2024 medRxiv preprint

Without a control group, the study cannot determine whether any observed change was caused by the supplement rather than expectation, time, changes in behavior, or other influences. It also did not establish that taking the product prevents infections, treats disease, or improves other meaningful clinical outcomes.
GeekWire reported that Stanford epidemiologist Andres Cardenas viewed the study as too small to be conclusive and cautioned that its design could introduce bias. The story also quoted researcher Lucia Aronica warning against giving a single biological measure too much meaning without considering overall health effects. What about the larger HTB Activ study?
Big Bold Health’s HTB Activ product page describes a separate 90-day study involving 662 participants who took an 18-gram daily dose of sprout powder. Those figures and any reported outcomes are the company’s claims on its product page, accessed in 2026; they should not be presented as independently established findings without independently reviewed results. Are immune-health supplement claims the same as disease claims?
No. FDA guidance says covered dietary-supplement structure/function and general well-being claims must be truthful, not misleading, and substantiated. Manufacturers must use the standard disclaimer and notify FDA within 30 days after first marketing a covered claim. These claims cannot say a product diagnoses, mitigates, treats, cures, or prevents a disease. Disease-risk health claims follow a different pathway involving FDA review. How should consumers weigh the cost?
A supplement is an optional expense, not a necessary shortcut to better health. GeekWire’s 2024 story quoted University of Washington dietitians who urged consumers to consider what is being sold, its cost, and whether a supplement is needed when food can provide beneficial nutrients. Kelly Morrow described supplements as a “gentle nudge” compared with medicine’s stronger effect; that analogy is not evidence that HTB products produce a particular outcome. For a purchase decision, check the exact product, serving size, ingredients, and study that supports the claim you care about. Evidence from a multi-ingredient capsule does not establish an effect for a powder or flour, and company-reported study details are not a substitute for independently reviewed results.
