The best tax preparation service depends on what you need it to do. For a straightforward federal return, start by checking whether you qualify for IRS Free File or a local VITA/TCE site. If you want to do the work yourself, compare tax software that supports your forms and state returns. If you want a person to prepare the return, look for a tax professional who can explain the fee, review process, and support before you authorize filing. This guide covers U.S. individual taxpayers filing 2025 federal returns during the 2026 filing season.
Start with free filing options
Free public and military programs may meet your needs without paying for commercial preparation. Eligibility and the amount of guidance differ, so check the details before choosing.
IRS Free File Guided Tax
For the 2026 filing season, taxpayers with 2025 adjusted gross income (AGI) of $89,000 or less can use IRS Free File Guided Tax, subject to the eligibility rules of each participating provider. Some offers include a free state return; others charge for state filing. Start at the IRS Free File page and use its trusted-partner tool or listed offers to access the program. The IRS says it is available in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. [c001] [c002]
The IRS named eight partners for the 2026 filing season: 1040Now; Drake (1040.com); ezTaxReturn.com; FileYourTaxes.com; On-Line Taxes; TaxAct; TaxHawk (FreeTaxUSA); and TaxSlayer. Their offers do not all support the same states or tax situations; rules may depend on age, AGI, state residency, or military status. [c002]

IRS Free File Fillable Forms
Free File Fillable Forms are available regardless of income to people comfortable preparing their own federal return. They are electronic forms for self-preparation, not the guided, step-by-step service offered through a Free File partner. [c001] [c002]
VITA and TCE
The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program generally serves low-to-moderate income taxpayers with free basic return preparation. Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) particularly serves people age 60 and older and specializes in pension and retirement questions. There is no single program-wide income limit; individual sites may set limits, and what a site can prepare depends on volunteer expertise. Use the IRS VITA/TCE locator and confirm that the site can handle your return. [c003] [c006]
Some sites offer “Self-Prep,” allowing taxpayers to prepare their own basic federal and state return with web-based software and an IRS-certified volunteer available to guide them. This option is only available at sites identified as offering Self-Prep. Site services vary. [c006]

MilTax for eligible military community members
MilTax is a free tax resource for eligible members of the military community; eligibility is not universal, so check current program terms. IRS pages differ on the number of state returns included: its 2026 filing-season release says up to three, while a separate March 2026 overview says up to five. Verify the current MilTax terms directly rather than relying on either state-return count. [c002] [c004]

Compare the main types of paid tax preparation
Commercial services range from software you operate yourself to a professional who prepares the return. The more work and responsibility you want to hand over, the more important it is to establish exactly what the quoted price includes.
| Service type | Who does the work | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Self-serve tax software | You enter information, answer prompts, and review the return. | Whether it supports every income source, form, deduction, credit, and state return you need; federal and state fees; and the cost of any necessary upgrade. [c005] [c009] |
| Software with expert assistance | You use the software, with expert help available or included at a specified service level. | Whether help is included or an add-on, which situations it covers, how to reach an expert, and whether the expert reviews or actually prepares the return. [c005] [c009] |
| Full-service preparation | A tax professional prepares the return, often with in-person or virtual options. | Who prepares and signs the return, what documents and review you must provide, the total fee, and what correction or follow-up support is included. [c008] [c009] |
Provider prices are not directly comparable unless you compare the same return, state filings, and support level. For example, TurboTax says most paid online/mobile products let customers begin without paying upfront and charge when they are ready to e-file, print, mail, or purchase an add-on; more complex situations and higher service levels can cost more. H&R Block offers online software as well as work with a tax professional in person or virtually. These are provider descriptions, not a normalized price comparison. [c005] [c009]

How much does tax preparation cost?
There is no single cost that applies to every return. The final amount can change with forms, tax circumstances, state returns, and the kind of support selected. Treat an advertised starting price as conditional until you confirm the total for your own filing method and needs.
As one specific offer, Jackson Hewitt advertises a $25 flat fee for its online filing product for 2025 returns. That is a provider-specific online offer, not a typical market price or a quote for in-store full-service preparation. Jackson Hewitt directs customers to contact a local office for an accurate in-store price. Confirm current terms before relying on the online offer. [c010]
Before paying, confirm the full federal and state total and any fees for additional states, forms, or expert help. Review the completed return and fee before authorizing filing. Provider comparisons and offers change; TaxAct says its comparison page reflects online individual consumer products as of April 1, 2026. [c005] [c009]

Choose based on your return and the help you want
- Consider free guided filing if your 2025 AGI is within the Free File threshold and a partner offer supports your return and state needs.
- Consider Fillable Forms if you are comfortable preparing your own federal return and want electronic forms rather than guided software.
- Check VITA or TCE if you may qualify for free basic preparation, especially if retirement questions or local volunteer support are relevant. Confirm the site handles your forms and situation.
- Choose self-serve software if you want to prepare the return yourself and can verify support for all required forms and state filings.
- Choose software with expert help if you want to enter information yourself but may need access to a person for questions or review. Confirm what “help” means for the selected tier.
- Consider full-service preparation if you prefer a professional to handle the preparation, or if the return is complex enough that you want professional assistance. Confirm the preparer’s role, fee, and support in advance.
The IRS advises taxpayers to review guidance on choosing a tax professional and recognize preparer red flags. It does not establish a common quality ranking of commercial services, so choose by fit, verified qualifications, scope, and transparent terms rather than assuming a single provider is best for everyone. [c008]
Check these details before you file or book
- Does the service support every form, income source, deduction, credit, and state return in your situation?
- What is the full price for federal and state filing, including additional states, forms, and support?
- Is expert help included, offered as an add-on, or limited to certain questions or situations?
- If a professional prepares the return, who signs it, and what review, correction, or follow-up support is included?
- Can you review the return and total fee before authorizing filing?
- Does the advertised price apply to your specific situation and filing method?
Prepare for a VITA/TCE appointment
Check the local site’s document instructions before you go, because services and requirements vary. Bring the records needed for your income and tax situation and confirm in advance that the site handles your return. A folder or organizer can be a convenient way to keep documents together, but it is optional; it is not an IRS-required purchase. [c006]
