Match the shoe to the child and activity
- Width: If a child needs more room, look for a shoe with a stated wide-width option rather than assuming a regular width will work. Fit the actual foot and check that the heel remains secure.
- Closure: Choose laces, hook-and-loop fasteners, elastic openings, or slip-ons according to the child’s ability and caregiver preference. Confirm the current model’s closure before buying.
- Use: Everyday school and play, running, rugged outdoor use, and water-oriented activities are different needs. A shoe listed for one category should not be assumed to suit every activity.
