Best Bitcoin IRA Companies: Compare Fees, Custody, and Fit

There is no universal best Bitcoin IRA provider. Compare account structure, full costs, custody, supported assets, and distribution rules before you choose.

There is no single best Bitcoin IRA provider for every investor. Fidelity Crypto for IRAs and BitcoinIRA offer different account models and disclose different fees, but the available information does not support a complete, like-for-like ranking. Compare the account structure, custody, total costs, and distribution rules—not just the headline trading fee—before choosing.

What a Bitcoin IRA is—and what it is not

“Bitcoin IRA” is a marketing term for a retirement account that permits Bitcoin exposure. It does not identify one standard account structure. A brokerage-based crypto IRA may let you trade through a financial firm, while a specialist platform may use a separate self-directed IRA custodian. Those arrangements can differ in who holds the assets, who controls private keys, and how you can take a distribution.

The IRS treats virtual currency as property for federal tax purposes. In Notice 2014-21, the IRS states: “For federal tax purposes, virtual currency is treated as property.” That tax classification is not IRS approval or endorsement of any provider, account, investment, or custody arrangement. The IRS says there is no list of approved retirement-plan investments; its rules also restrict prohibited transactions and generally bar IRAs from investing in collectibles, subject to statutory exceptions. See the IRS guidance on prohibited transactions and IRA investments and Publication 590-B (2025).

The IRS virtual-currency FAQ says its answers generally apply to digital-asset transactions completed before January 1, 2025. Do not assume that FAQ alone covers later transactions; check current IRS guidance for the relevant tax year and get qualified tax advice about your own account and transactions.

Bitcoin IRA providers to compare

The two providers below have specific fee and custody disclosures in the cited materials, but the information does not establish a universal winner or a complete comparison of all costs and account terms. Figures are provider disclosures, not independent evaluations. Confirm the current fee schedule and account agreement before opening an account.

Provider or offering Account and custody information Disclosed costs What to verify
Fidelity Crypto for IRAs Fidelity says customers can trade Bitcoin and Ether in an IRA. Fidelity Digital Assets provides custody, and Fidelity says most crypto is held in cold storage. Fidelity says there is no opening or maintenance fee and charges a 1% trading fee on crypto buys and sells. The cited page does not establish every account type, state eligibility, minimum, transfer or distribution charge, or the full custody and insurance terms. Confirm those details and how the account handles distributions. Fidelity’s IRA service details.
BitcoinIRA BitcoinIRA describes a digital-asset IRA offering. Its fee page distinguishes its Crypto IRA from its Freedom Account; do not assume terms for one apply to the other. The fee page lists a 2% fee per buy or sell for Crypto IRA and a $0 monthly custody fee for Freedom Account. BitcoinIRA says the total purchase price also includes liquidity-provider costs. The cited page does not establish that these figures cover every setup, administration, transfer, closure, or distribution cost, or that the Freedom Account custody figure applies to Crypto IRA. Check the fee schedule and agreement for the exact product. BitcoinIRA’s fee details.

Unchained’s comparison names Bitcoin IRA, iTrustCapital, Swan, and Onramp among providers that use third-party custodians and presents a broad range of costs. It says its information is compiled from public sources, so use it as a lead—not as a substitute for a provider’s current agreement. The cited comparison does not establish a same-date, complete set of terms for every company. Unchained’s provider comparison.

How to decide which provider fits

Compare the full cost, not one fee

Build a complete cost picture for the exact account you are considering. A low or zero monthly charge does not show what trades, liquidity, transfers, or distributions will cost. Ask for the applicable fee schedule and check:

  • Account setup and administration charges.
  • Annual or monthly custody fees.
  • Buy and sell fees, plus any spread or liquidity-provider cost.
  • Fees to transfer, close, or take a distribution from the account.

Calculate costs using the amount and trading pattern you actually expect; a one-time purchase and frequent trading can produce different totals. The published Fidelity and BitcoinIRA figures above are not a complete category-wide fee comparison.

Find out who holds the assets and controls the keys

Ask for the legal custodian’s name and the account documents that describe custody. A “cold storage” label alone does not tell you who controls the private keys, whether you can direct a transfer, how assets are segregated, or what insurance covers and excludes. Clarify how custody or access would work if the provider or custodian changes. Do not assume you can use a personal hardware wallet for IRA assets; the account and custodian terms govern custody and distributions.

Check account types, assets, and eligibility

Confirm which account structures are actually available to you—such as traditional or Roth IRAs—and whether the provider supports your state, intended asset, and funding method. Ask about minimums, contributions, rollovers, transfers, trading hours, and any restrictions that could affect how you plan to use the account. The cited disclosures do not establish all of these details for the providers compared here, so verify them directly before applying.

Choose direct crypto exposure only if it suits your purpose

Holding crypto in an IRA does not remove price volatility, possible illiquidity, or custody and counterparty risks. Fidelity specifically warns that crypto is highly volatile and may become illiquid at any time. If your goal is Bitcoin price exposure rather than direct ownership of crypto, a brokerage IRA holding a spot Bitcoin fund may be another route to investigate. Fund structure, fees, and current product details are not compared here; review the fund’s own disclosures and consider the differences in what you would own.

A practical checklist before opening an account

  1. Identify the structure. Ask whether this is a brokerage crypto IRA or a self-directed IRA using a separate custodian, and obtain the account documents.
  2. Request the complete fee schedule. Include setup, administration, custody, trading, spreads or liquidity costs, transfers, closure, and distributions.
  3. Confirm custody and access. Identify the custodian, key-control arrangement, asset segregation, insurance scope and exclusions, and process if a provider or custodian changes.
  4. Verify the account’s practical rules. Confirm supported assets and account types, state eligibility, minimums, funding routes, trading availability, and withdrawal or in-kind distribution procedures.
  5. Review tax and prohibited-transaction questions. Check current IRS material and consult a qualified tax professional about your account structure and intended transactions.

Use provider documents to answer these questions on the same date when comparing alternatives. If a provider cannot clearly explain fees, custody, or distribution procedures, treat that as an unresolved decision point rather than filling in the gap with a broad “best” label.
