How much did Bayer pay to settle the Roundup lawsuits?
On June 24, 2020, Bayer announced a Roundup resolution package totaling $10.1 billion to $10.9 billion. The range combined two distinct arrangements: $8.8 billion to $9.6 billion for then-current litigation, including an allowance Bayer said it expected to cover unresolved claims, and a separate $1.25 billion agreement intended to address potential future litigation.
Those are announced settlement amounts, not evidence that the full sum was paid immediately or that every claim was resolved. Bayer said the agreements contained no admission of liability or wrongdoing. A settlement is not a court finding that Roundup caused cancer.
What did the 2020 settlement cover?
Bayer said the current-litigation resolution was expected to bring closure to approximately 75% of then-current Roundup litigation, involving approximately 125,000 filed and unfiled claims. Those figures were Bayer’s estimates at the time of the announcement, not a final count of claims paid or resolved.

The package did not settle every Roundup case. Three cases that had gone to trial—Johnson, Hardeman and Pilliod—were excluded and continued through appeals. The overall 2020 announcement also bundled separate Monsanto matters involving dicamba drift and PCB water litigation; those matters are not part of the Roundup-specific $10.1 billion to $10.9 billion figure.
Is the $7.25 billion Roundup settlement the same deal?
No. Bayer announced the $7.25 billion figure in February 2026 for a separate proposed nationwide class settlement. It concerns claims alleging Roundup exposure before February 17, 2026 and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Bayer described a program of declining, capped payments over up to 21 years, subject to court approval. The proposal is not interchangeable with the 2020 package: it has a different claimant group, payment structure and approval process.

The procedural dates Bayer reported in March 2026 were a preliminary approval in Missouri on March 4, an opt-out and objection period ending June 4, and a fairness hearing scheduled for July 9. Those announcements give the planned schedule; they do not establish whether the hearing occurred or whether final approval was entered. Bayer said final effectiveness would also depend on appeals being exhausted, a process that could take several years.
What did the Supreme Court decide about Roundup warnings?
On June 25, 2026, the Supreme Court decided Monsanto Co. v. Durnell. It held that the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) expressly preempted Durnell’s state-law failure-to-warn claim because that claim would have required a cancer warning different from the EPA-approved label.

The ruling concerns that particular failure-to-warn claim. It did not itself approve or finalize the separate 2026 class settlement, nor does it resolve every Roundup-related claim. The proposed settlement has its own state-court approval and appeal process.

Bayer’s audited 2025 financial statements reported $11.3 billion in provisions and liabilities for glyphosate litigation as of December 31, 2025. That is an accounting figure recorded at a specific date. It is not the amount of the 2020 settlement, and it does not mean Bayer had already paid $11.3 billion in cash.
