The best mobile credit card processing setup depends on how you take payments: a phone paired with a reader, Tap to Pay on a compatible phone, or a standalone handheld terminal. For a U.S. seller comparing documented options, Square lists a $59 reader and a 2.6% + 15¢ in-person rate; PayPal lists a $29 first reader and a $199 standalone terminal. Those figures are not enough to identify the cheapest processor for every business: transaction costs, device compatibility, connectivity, and existing sales tools also matter.
Choose the type of mobile payment setup you need
Mobile payment acceptance generally comes in three forms. The right choice depends on your phone, where you sell, and whether you want to carry a separate payment device. NerdWallet describes the common hardware choices as handheld terminals and readers paired with a smartphone or tablet, and notes that Tap to Pay can accept contactless cards on a phone without a separate reader. NerdWallet’s mobile POS overview provides that general distinction.
- Phone-paired reader: A small card reader connects to a compatible phone or tablet, usually over Bluetooth, and works through the provider’s point-of-sale app. This supports chip and contactless payments, depending on the reader.
- Tap to Pay: A compatible phone accepts contactless payments directly, without a separate reader. Availability depends on the provider, phone, and market; it is not a solution for every card type or device.
- Standalone terminal: A dedicated handheld device takes payments without requiring a phone to act as the payment interface. It can be a better fit for sellers who want a separate payment device, but costs more upfront than the listed PayPal reader.
A reader is not automatically interchangeable between processors. Check that the exact model is supported by the app and account you plan to use before buying one, especially when shopping for third-party hardware.

How to choose among Square, PayPal POS, and Shopify POS
Square: a clearly priced reader option
Square’s U.S. page gives both an upfront reader price and an in-person transaction rate, which makes it easier to estimate costs for a specific sales volume and average ticket. Its listed rate is 2.6% + 15¢ per in-person payment, and the $59 reader accepts chip and contactless/NFC payments, including Apple Pay and Google Pay, according to Square. The page also links to Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android. These are vendor-published details, not independent test results.

- Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
Square says the reader needs an internet connection. Its offline-payment option is described as available for up to 24 hours, subject to additional terms; do not assume every account or transaction qualifies. Review Square’s current conditions before relying on offline acceptance at a location with unreliable service.
PayPal POS: a lower listed reader price or a dedicated terminal
PayPal’s U.S. hardware page lists its first Card Reader at $29 and a standalone Terminal at $199. The reader connects to a smartphone or tablet over Bluetooth through the PayPal POS app; PayPal also describes Tap to Pay without extra hardware. The cited hardware page does not state a processing rate, so compare PayPal’s current fees separately before deciding that the lower reader price means lower overall cost.
Rank #3
- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
PayPal specifies iOS 14 or later, or Android 8.0 or later, for the reader. Confirm the exact device and Tap to Pay eligibility before purchase because availability can vary by market.
Shopify POS: a fit to investigate if you already use Shopify
Shopify’s reader path is tied to Shopify POS rather than being a generic reader option. The Help Center says supported readers require Shopify Payments and a supported country, and that the country and currency must match the physical store location for the documented in-person flow. Reader models vary by region. This makes Shopify most relevant to merchants who already use its sales tools and can meet those eligibility conditions.
Rank #4
- Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
- Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
- Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
- App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).
Calculate the cost for your actual sales
Compare recurring processing charges separately from one-time hardware spending. A processor’s published percentage and fixed fee affect every eligible transaction, while a reader or terminal is generally an upfront purchase. A lower reader price does not by itself make a service less expensive over time.
- Estimate your typical ticket and number of payments. Use a realistic average sale and monthly transaction count; the fixed per-payment fee matters more when tickets are small.
- Apply the listed rate only where it is stated. For Square’s cited U.S. in-person price, estimate the processing charge as 2.6% of each payment plus 15¢, then multiply by the number of payments. This is an estimate based on that published rate, not a quote for other transaction types or providers.
- Add hardware and any other relevant costs. Include the reader or terminal purchase, and check the provider’s current pricing for any fees not covered by the cited hardware page.
- Compare the same sales pattern across providers. Confirm the applicable transaction rates, card mix, payment methods, and account conditions for each provider before treating the totals as comparable.
The sources summarized here do not establish a full provider-by-provider cost model, so they do not support naming one service as cheapest overall.

Check phone, country, and operating-system compatibility
Before ordering hardware, confirm support for the exact phone or tablet, point-of-sale app, country, and currency you will use. Requirements differ by provider and reader model.
- PayPal POS: PayPal lists iOS 14+ or Android 8.0+ for its reader and a Bluetooth connection to the POS app.
- Square: Square describes broad iOS and Android compatibility for its reader but does not specify a minimum OS version on the cited product page. Check its current device guidance for your model.
- Shopify POS: Shopify’s Help Center says device support varies and identifies a planned OS update: beginning in January 2027, Android devices must run Android 13 or later and iPhones and iPads must run iOS 18 or later; devices on older OS versions must be updated by June 6, 2027. These are future-dated requirements stated by Shopify in a page accessed in 2026, so verify the current policy before relying on them.
Plan for weak or unavailable internet
Do not assume a mobile reader can process payments offline. Square says its reader requires internet through Wi-Fi, a hotspot, or cellular data; it also describes offline payments for up to 24 hours, subject to additional terms. The cited PayPal and Shopify pages do not establish equivalent offline behavior. If you sell at markets, events, or in the field, check the provider’s current offline rules and have a reliable connection plan rather than treating offline acceptance as guaranteed.
Quick Recap
What to confirm before you buy
- Does the reader or terminal work with your chosen processor and POS app? Processor-specific readers may not work with other services.
- Does your phone meet the provider’s OS and Bluetooth requirements, and is Tap to Pay supported on that device?
- Are the hardware and payment flow available in your country, with the correct currency and account eligibility?
- What are the current in-person rates for your payment mix, including both percentage and fixed transaction charges?
- What happens if connectivity drops, and do offline transactions have limits or additional terms?
- Will the POS tools fit your inventory, ecommerce, and existing business workflow? Verify integrations and support conditions directly with the provider.
