How to Choose a Checked Suitcase for Frequent Travel

A practical checked-suitcase guide: measure wheels and handles, account for empty weight, compare shell and handling features, and verify the rules for your operating carrier.

There is no single checked-suitcase size or weight allowance that works worldwide. Airlines set rules by carrier, route, fare and itinerary, so choose a case by measuring its full exterior, checking its empty weight, and comparing both with the rules for the operating airline on your booking. A common reference is 158 cm (62 in) for total dimensions and 23 kg (50 lb) per bag, but neither figure is a universal entitlement.

What size checked suitcase is allowed?

Start with the airline and itinerary, not a generic suitcase label such as “large.” The International Air Transport Association says checked-bag allowances vary by airline and route. Its 158 cm (62 in) combined-dimension figure is a common reference where that size concept applies, not a promise that every carrier or ticket accepts a bag that size. See IATA’s passenger baggage guidance.

Measure the complete case

Measure the outside of the packed suitcase at its widest points, including wheels, handles and other protrusions, then add length, width and height. Consumer NZ cautions that manufacturer measurements may omit wheels and handles. Compare your total with the exact limit for your flight; an unexpanded case may fit while the same case expanded does not. Consumer NZ’s luggage guide explains the measurement issue.

Check the operating carrier and ticket

Rules can change with route, fare, region and ticket date, and a connecting itinerary may involve another airline’s requirements. American Airlines publishes route- and fare-dependent fees and notes ticket-date changes; ANA says another operating carrier’s rules may apply on some itineraries. British Airways publishes its own dimensions and weight example. Use these carrier pages as examples of why to verify your own booking, not as interchangeable global standards: American Airlines, ANA, and British Airways.

How much should an empty checked suitcase weigh?

There is no universal ideal empty weight; the practical limit is how much allowance remains after the case itself is counted. IATA describes 23 kg (50 lb) as a common occupational-health-and-safety guideline for an individual checked bag, not a standard allowance for every traveler. Consumer NZ likewise notes that suitcase weight counts toward the baggage allowance. A heavy case leaves less room for belongings under a given limit.

Compare the empty weight on the manufacturer’s specifications with your airline’s permitted packed weight, and leave a buffer for scale differences or last-minute purchases. A luggage scale can help check the final packed bag. Large capacity is useful for longer trips, but it can also make overpacking easier; volume does not increase the airline’s weight allowance.

Hard-shell or soft-sided: which suits your trip?

Neither construction is best for every traveler. Consumer NZ describes hard shells as offering more protection and usually weighing more, while soft-sided cases are typically lighter and often open from one side. Hard-shell cases usually open into two halves. Consider what you pack, how you access the contents and whether saving empty weight matters more than shell protection.

  • Hard shell: Consider it when protection for packed items is a priority and the case’s empty weight still leaves adequate packing allowance.
  • Soft-sided: Consider it when a typically lighter case or a one-sided opening better fits your packing routine. Check whether exterior pockets and their contents could affect the packed dimensions.

For either type, inspect zipper quality and protection, lock type, internal organization, wheel maneuverability, and the handle’s grip and adjustability. Expansion can add useful room, but it also adds fabric and a zipper; check the expanded exterior dimensions and packed weight against the carrier’s rules.

How to compare checked suitcases without relying on a “best” label

Use the same measurements for each candidate and compare them with the actual flight requirements. Consumer NZ says it tested more than 10 models from seven brands and describes its work as assessing durability and ease of use, but its guide does not provide a current model-level ranking sufficient to establish a worldwide winner. Treat the checklist below as a way to match a suitcase to your needs, not as a test result.

  1. Confirm exterior fit: Record dimensions including wheels and handles. Add the three measurements and compare the sum, plus each individual dimension if the airline specifies them, with the operating carrier’s limit.
  2. Calculate usable weight: Subtract the empty suitcase weight from the packed-weight allowance that applies to your ticket. Do not assume the 23 kg (50 lb) reference is your allowance.
  3. Match capacity to the trip: Compare stated capacity and internal layout with what you need to pack. More liters can help on longer trips, but do not treat capacity as permission to exceed weight limits.
  4. Check handling details: Look at wheel design and movement, handle comfort and adjustment, zipper protection, lock type, pockets and how the case opens.
  5. Review expansion and repair support: Compare standard and expanded dimensions. Read the warranty terms for covered damage, repair process, exclusions and service availability where you live.
