The best fishing backpack with rod holders is the one that securely carries your rods and fits the tackle you already use. Rod retention varies: some packs have slip pockets or straps, while others use bottle pockets to hold rod tubes. These manufacturer-specification comparisons can help you narrow the choice, but they are not a hands-on or controlled comfort test.

How to choose a rod holder that fits your setup
The label “rod holder” can describe very different ways of carrying a rod. A sleeve or slip pocket supports part of a rod or combo; straps or cords secure it against the pack; a bottle-pocket holster is intended for a rod tube. Before buying, identify the design and check that it suits your rod, reel, and how you move between fishing spots.
- Check the rod-butt diameter, rod length, reel position, and combo weight the holder can accommodate.
- Confirm how many rods the pack can carry at once and whether they remain secured when you walk.
- If using a rod tube, check that the pack’s holster dimensions and position work with your tube.

Match tackle capacity to the boxes you own
A large capacity figure does not tell you whether your tackle trays will fit or be easy to reach. Check tray size and thickness, count the included boxes, and consider whether you prefer top access, front access, or an open-access compartment.
- For 3600 boxes: Shimano’s Blackmoon Front Load lists space for four 3600 trays. Evolution’s Largemouth 3.0 includes three 3600 Drift QuikLatch trays and says it can hold up to six.
- For 3700 boxes: Shimano’s Blackmoon Top Load lists space for three 3700 trays. Evolution’s Drift Series 3700 includes six Drift Series trays and lists capacity for up to six 3700 trays in its open-access compartment.
- For mixed gear: Riverborn lists up to six 3700 utility boxes, depending on their height, while the Simms G3 Guide is described by volume and external organization rather than a tray count.
Tray counts are product specifications, not guarantees that every box of a nominal size will fit. Evolution lists exclusions for some tray lines in its Drift Series 3700 pack, so confirm compatibility if you plan to use trays you already own. Check Evolution’s Drift Series details.
