Ground beef averaged $6.12 per pound and uncooked beef steaks averaged $11.49 per pound, according to Associated Press reporting based on U.S. government data. Those figures describe that month—not the latest available prices.
What did beef cost in June 2025?
The Associated Press reported these average U.S. retail prices for June 2025, citing government data:

These are average price levels, not prices every store charged. They also differ from the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which tracks changes in prices over time rather than reporting these per-pound averages.
What the June inflation figures show
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that its beef and veal price index rose 2.0% from May to June 2025 and 10.6% over the 12 months ending in June. Within that broad category, the index for uncooked ground beef rose 1.5% in June and 10.3% over the year; uncooked beef steaks rose 3.2% in June and 12.4% over the year.

For context, the broader food-at-home index rose 0.3% in June and 2.4% over the year. Beef was therefore rising faster than grocery-store food overall. The monthly figures also show that steak prices increased more quickly than ground beef prices during June, even though ground beef’s reported average price per pound was lower.
Why were beef prices so high?
There were fewer cattle
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service counted 86.7 million cattle and calves on January 1, 2025, 1% fewer than a year earlier. A smaller herd limits the supply available to produce beef. Rebuilding herds takes time, so changes in ranchers’ decisions do not immediately translate into more cattle ready for slaughter.

Cattle prices were setting records
USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) reported that five-area weekly slaughter-steer prices reached eight consecutive records through the week ending June 15, 2025. The average for that week was $238.68 per hundredweight. Higher prices for cattle entering the production chain add pressure upstream, though they do not pass through to retail prices in a fixed amount or on an identical schedule.
Ranchers faced a choice between selling and rebuilding
Associated Press reporting also cited drought and higher feed costs as pressures on ranchers. When current cattle prices are attractive but raising animals is costly, selling cows can bring in cash now while keeping them may support future calf production. Texas A&M livestock economist David Anderson described the decision to AP this way: “And so it’s this balancing act and so far the side that’s been winning is to sell her and get the check.”

These pressures help explain the direction of the market, but the available figures do not assign a precise share of the retail increase to each cause. No single factor should be treated as the whole explanation.
How cattle-market prices connect to grocery prices
Beef prices are measured at different stages: livestock prices at the farm or market, wholesale prices between businesses, and retail prices paid by shoppers. USDA ERS’s meat price-spreads data compare these stages; the retail figures draw on BLS data, while livestock and wholesale prices draw on USDA Agricultural Marketing Service reports.

Because the stages use different measures and reflect different costs and timing, a rise in cattle prices does not translate dollar-for-dollar or immediately into a particular grocery-store price. A monthly retail average is also not a quote for any one store or cut beyond the category it measures.

No. June 2025 is the period behind the headline figures above, not the latest observation. In its later outlook, USDA ERS reported that beef and veal prices in August 2026 were 5.9% higher than in August 2025, despite falling 0.6% from July to August. ERS forecast a 9.4% increase for beef and veal for full-year 2026; that is a projection, not a confirmed outcome.
