Behind Bernard Arnault’s Fortune: How He Built LVMH—and Where He Ranks Now

Bernard Arnault built his fortune by turning control of Christian Dior into a larger luxury strategy, then leading LVMH as it expanded into a portfolio of maisons. He is not reliably “the world’s richest man”: Bloomberg’s ranking, as reported by Cinco Días on September 11, 2026, placed him outside its top ten, with an estimated fortune of $143 billion.

Who is Bernard Arnault?

Born in Roubaix, France, on March 5, 1949, Arnault studied at École Polytechnique and began his career as an engineer at Ferret-Savinel, his family’s construction business. He advanced through its management ranks and became chairman in 1978, according to LVMH’s official biography.

His move from construction to luxury goods began in 1984, when he reorganized Financière Agache and made Christian Dior central to a luxury-company strategy. In 1989, he became LVMH’s majority shareholder. LVMH says he has been its chairman and CEO since then.

How did Arnault build his fortune?

He made Dior the cornerstone of a luxury strategy

The 1984 reorganization of Financière Agache marked the shift toward luxury. Rather than building around a single label, Arnault’s strategy centered on acquiring and managing prestigious brands. Dior became the cornerstone of that approach, according to LVMH’s account of his career.

He took control of a group with a growing portfolio

LVMH was formed in 1987 through the merger of Louis Vuitton and Moët Hennessy. Its 2025 annual report lists 75 maisons, each with its own heritage, identity and autonomy. Arnault’s position therefore rests on leadership of a group spanning multiple brands and businesses, not ownership of one fashion house. The report gives the group motto as “Passionate about creativity.”

Arnault is also president of the board of Groupe Arnault S.E., his family holding company, and LVMH’s biography says he has five children. These details help distinguish his family’s holding-company role from the operating leadership of LVMH.

Is Bernard Arnault still the world’s richest man?

No—not according to the latest dated ranking in the sources cited here. A Cinco Días report citing Bloomberg said on September 11, 2026, that Arnault’s estimated fortune was $143 billion and that he had fallen outside Bloomberg’s top ten. The report put his decline since the start of 2026 at $65 billion.

That figure should not be confused with Bloomberg’s earlier snapshot: its profile listed Arnault at number nine with an estimated $161 billion in data dated May 20, 2026. Bloomberg says its index updates each business day after the New York market close and values publicly traded holdings using recent closing prices, with currency conversion at current exchange rates. A rank or estimate from one date is not a permanent measure of wealth.

Publisher and date Reported estimate Reported rank
Bloomberg profile, data dated May 20, 2026 $161 billion #9
Cinco Días, citing Bloomberg, September 11, 2026 $143 billion; report also cited a $65 billion decline since the start of 2026 Outside Bloomberg’s top ten

The estimates differ because they are snapshots from different dates, and the later report describes a substantial decline. They should be read with their publishers and dates attached, not blended into a single current figure.

What is known about LVMH governance and succession?

LVMH’s 2025 Universal Registration Document provides a formal governance snapshot dated February 9, 2026. It lists Arnault as chairman and CEO and identifies members of the Arnault family in board and executive roles. The registration document records those official positions; it does not, in the information cited here, name a successor.

A July 24, 2026 Le Monde feature describes succession as unresolved and reports on family members’ positions, tensions and ambitions. Those are the newspaper’s accounts and analysis, not a confirmed succession plan. The distinction matters: formal filings establish current roles, while reporting about family dynamics does not establish who will take over.
