The reported award included $65 million in compensatory damages and $2 billion in punitive damages. Bayer said it would appeal, but the verdict figure alone does not establish what Barnes ultimately may collect: the later status of his Georgia case is not established by the reports cited here.
What did the Georgia jury decide?
John Barnes alleged that Roundup exposure caused his non-Hodgkin lymphoma. On March 23, 2025, the Associated Press reported that a Georgia jury found for Barnes and awarded him $2.065 billion, citing plaintiff-side lawyers for the amount and its breakdown.
| Damages | Reported amount | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Compensatory | $65 million | Damages awarded to Barnes, as reported by the Associated Press on March 23, 2025. |
| Punitive | $2 billion | Punitive damages awarded by the jury, as reported by the Associated Press on March 23, 2025. |
| Total | $2.065 billion | The reported combined jury verdict, not by itself a statement of the final amount payable after later court proceedings. |
The verdict concerned Barnes’s claims. It is not, on its own, a scientific conclusion about glyphosate, every Roundup product, or the risk to every person who has used one.
Did Bayer appeal, and does the verdict still stand?
Bayer said it would appeal, according to the Associated Press’s March 2025 report. That announcement does not establish that an appeal produced an affirmance, reduction, reversal, or other final outcome. The cited reporting does not establish the later procedural status of Barnes’s Georgia case as of October 8, 2026, so the $2.065 billion should be described as the reported jury verdict—not as a confirmed amount Barnes will receive or as an award known to remain in force.

What did the Supreme Court’s 2026 Roundup ruling decide?
On June 25, 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court decided Monsanto Co. v. Durnell, a separate case from Missouri. The Court held that the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) preempted Durnell’s state-law failure-to-warn claim because it would have required a cancer warning that the Environmental Protection Agency had not required. The opinion stated: “FIFRA expressly preempts Durnell’s state-law failure-to-warn claim because the claim would require Monsanto to add a cancer warning to Roundup’s label.”
Durnell did not enter judgment in Barnes’s Georgia case. Its holding concerns the particular failure-to-warn claim before the Court; its effect on other claims depends on the claims and procedural posture in each case. It should not be described as automatically resolving every Roundup lawsuit.

How does the Georgia verdict fit into the wider litigation?
Bayer’s 2025 annual report, published in 2026, said 28 Roundup trials had concluded by February 2026 in federal and state courts across eight states: California, Missouri, Oregon, Arkansas, Delaware, Illinois, Georgia, and Pennsylvania. That is Bayer’s reported count, not a forecast of how many cases will ultimately be tried or how they will be decided.
The same annual report listed US$11.3 billion in provisions and liabilities for glyphosate litigation as of December 31, 2025. This is a company-reported financial figure; it is not the amount of Barnes’s verdict, an individual claimant’s likely recovery, or a neutral prediction of future payouts.

Separately, the Associated Press reported on February 17, 2026, that Bayer had proposed a $7.25 billion settlement covering thousands of Roundup cancer claims. The proposal was still subject to court approval in that report. It was a broader proposed settlement, not proof that Barnes’s Georgia case had been resolved.

The headline figure captures a jury’s reported award in one plaintiff’s case. To understand its present legal or financial significance, keep the verdict, Bayer’s stated intention to appeal, the separate Supreme Court ruling, and the broader settlement proposal distinct. None of those facts alone establishes Barnes’s final recovery or the outcome of his Georgia case.
