Celebrity Net Worth estimates Berry Gordy’s net worth at $400 million. That figure is a third-party estimate, not a verified accounting of his current wealth: the site does not explain its methodology, and no official financial disclosure establishes Gordy’s present assets and liabilities.
How much is Berry Gordy worth?
The available published estimate is $400 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth, whose page was accessed October 8, 2026. The estimate is not accompanied by a calculation method. It should therefore be read as an approximate media estimate, not a confirmed current net-worth figure.
Net worth is the value of assets minus liabilities. A company’s sale price, a publishing transaction, or the amount someone received at a particular point in time does not by itself establish that person’s wealth today. The available sources do not provide a current balance sheet for Gordy, a valuation of any remaining rights, or a complete account of liabilities.
How Berry Gordy built his wealth
Motown began with a small family loan
Gordy founded Tamla, the venture that became Motown, in 1959 with an $800 loan from his family’s Ber-Berry Co-op, according to the Motown Museum. The museum says he applied lessons from his work in an auto plant to record production and artist development.

Gordy’s work was not limited to running a record company. The museum credits him with writing or co-writing songs for Jackie Wilson and describes Motown as a label and artist-development operation. Gordy aimed to develop performers as well as make records, envisioning a process in which a “kid could walk in one door an unknown off the street and come out the other a polished performer,” as the museum records.
The Motown sale and retained businesses
In 1988, the Los Angeles Times reported that Gordy sold Motown to MCA Inc. and Boston Ventures for $61 million. The report said he retained Jobete, Motown’s music-publishing division, as well as its film and television production company. The $61 million was the reported sale price of the company, not a disclosed amount Gordy personally kept after transaction terms, taxes, or other obligations.

A separate Jobete transaction
Biography.com reports that Gordy received $132 million for selling half of Jobete in 1997. This is a separate publishing transaction from the 1988 Motown record-company sale. It does not establish the value of any remaining rights or Gordy’s current net worth.
What the dollar figures do—and don’t—show
| Figure | What it refers to | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| $400 million | Estimated net worth | Celebrity Net Worth estimate; page accessed October 8, 2026. No calculation methodology is provided. |
| $61 million | Reported Motown sale price | Los Angeles Times, reporting on the 1988 sale; not a statement of Gordy’s personal proceeds. |
| $132 million | Reported proceeds from selling half of Jobete | Biography.com account of the 1997 transaction; not a current valuation of remaining holdings. |
| $800 | Family loan used to begin the Motown venture | Motown Museum account of the 1959 founding. |
These amounts describe different things at different dates. Adding the transaction figures to one another—or treating them as current assets—would not produce a reliable net-worth calculation. The documented history explains why Gordy is associated with substantial wealth, but it does not verify the $400 million estimate.

Is Berry Gordy’s salary known?
The available sources do not establish a current salary for Gordy. Celebrity Net Worth’s page raises a salary question, but it supplies an estimate of net worth rather than a documented salary figure. A net-worth estimate and annual income are different measures.

Gordy’s autobiography, To Be Loved: The Music, the Magic, the Memories of Motown, was released in 1994. It offers a first-person account of his career, but it is not evidence for the $400 million estimate.
