The most comfortable travel backpack is the one that fits your body, stays stable when packed, and matches your airline’s baggage rules. For long airport walks with a heavy load, prioritize an adjustable padded harness and a secure-feeling backpanel; a hipbelt can help transfer some load on larger packs. No single option here is established as the comfort winner for every traveler, so compare fit and packed dimensions before choosing.
Start with the kind of cabin bag you need
An under-seat personal item and an overhead cabin bag are different size targets. First check the operating airline’s current rules for your exact fare and route, then compare those limits with the backpack’s external dimensions when packed. A manufacturer’s “carry-on” label does not guarantee acceptance on every flight.
For example, Ryanair Help Centre says: “All our fares include one small personal bag (40 x 30 x 20 cm), which must fit under the seat in front of you.” That is Ryanair’s policy, not a universal allowance. Its help page also lists an optional 10 kg cabin bag of up to 55 x 40 x 20 cm. Check the current policy before travel, since airline rules can change.
Compare these backpacks by size and carry system
The product specifications below are manufacturer-stated unless noted otherwise. Dimensions and weight help establish whether a pack suits your use case; they do not establish how comfortable it will feel on your body.

How to judge comfort for your body and load
Try the intended load
If possible, try the backpack with roughly the gear you expect to carry. An empty bag may sit and move differently from a loaded one. Check whether the straps adjust to your torso and shoulders, whether the backpanel contacts you steadily, and whether the load shifts as you walk.
Check support in proportion to the load
A sternum strap can help stabilize shoulder straps. On a larger pack, a hipbelt and load lifters provide additional adjustment and support features. Whether those features improve comfort for you depends on fit, load and how you carry the bag; their presence alone is not a comfort score.

Balance support against weight and space
A larger pack can have a more substantial carry system, but it also takes up more space and weighs more. Compare empty weight as well as capacity, and consider whether you will use the hipbelt or other support features enough to justify a bigger bag. A compact expandable pack offers flexibility, but expansion can make airline fit less predictable.

A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Confirm whether you need an under-seat personal item or an overhead cabin bag, and check the airline’s rules for your fare and route.
- Compare external dimensions when the bag is packed, including any expanded configuration; do not rely on capacity or a “carry-on” label alone.
- Compare empty weight and capacity with the load you actually intend to carry.
- Assess strap shape and adjustability, backpanel contact and ventilation, and whether the load moves as you walk.
- Check for a sternum strap, hipbelt or load lifters if you expect to walk far with a substantial load.
- Consider practical access features such as laptop access, a trolley pass-through and stowaway straps in light of how you travel.
