GDAX was Coinbase’s advanced trading platform for individuals, but it is no longer the platform to sign up for or follow as a current exchange. Coinbase announced in 2018 that GDAX would become Coinbase Pro; Coinbase later replaced Pro with Coinbase Advanced. If you are looking for Coinbase’s current advanced-trading service, start with its Coinbase Advanced overview, and check availability and terms for your location.
What was GDAX?
GDAX—short for Global Digital Asset Exchange—was Coinbase’s advanced trading platform for individuals. It offered a trading experience distinct from Coinbase’s simpler consumer-facing service. The name and product are now historical: Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong wrote on May 23, 2018, “Today we’re announcing that GDAX — our professional trading platform for individuals — will evolve to become Coinbase Pro.” (Coinbase’s 2018 announcement.)
The title’s reference to BTC, ETH and LTC reflects the assets associated with the old GDAX guide topic; it is not confirmation that all three are currently available to every Coinbase customer. Supported assets can vary by region and account. Check Coinbase’s current information for your jurisdiction before planning a trade.
What happened to GDAX?
GDAX became Coinbase Pro
Coinbase announced the change on May 23, 2018. Its launch announcement said customers’ GDAX balances and trade history would appear in Coinbase Pro, and that the two platforms would operate side by side until June 29, 2018. Those dates describe the original transition, not a current migration window. See Coinbase’s Coinbase Pro announcement.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Coinbase Advanced replaced Coinbase Pro
Coinbase later replaced Coinbase Pro with Coinbase Advanced. Coinbase’s transition guidance said migrated Pro balances could be used in Advanced and that customers could access Pro transaction history through the end of 2023. That historical access period has passed, so the old guidance does not establish that a former GDAX or Pro account’s history can still be accessed today. Read the Coinbase Pro-to-Advanced transition guidance for its stated terms, and contact Coinbase through its current support channels about an account-specific issue.
What should a beginner use instead?
For Coinbase’s current advanced-trading offering, Coinbase describes Advanced as intended for more experienced traders and says it provides interactive charts and advanced order types. Its help page says there is no subscription fee and describes volume-based trading fees. Fee rates and terms can change, so check the current schedule and your account’s displayed terms before trading. The page does not establish that BTC, ETH and LTC are all available in every region. Start with What is Coinbase Advanced? and verify supported assets and features where you live.

How do Coinbase Advanced order types differ?
Coinbase’s help material describes several order types. The practical distinction for a beginner is whether you are prioritizing immediate execution, specifying conditions or prices, or managing how an order is worked over time. An order type does not remove market risk.

- Market: Designed to execute immediately at the best available market price. It can fill at several prices, and because execution is immediate, it cannot be canceled afterward. The final price is not guaranteed in advance.
- Limit: A limit order specifies a price condition for buying or selling. It gives you control over the price limit, but execution is not guaranteed if the market does not meet the condition.
- Stop-limit: Uses a stop trigger to place a limit order. The trigger and limit price are distinct; triggering the order does not guarantee it will fill.
- Take-profit/stop-loss and bracket orders: Tools for setting conditional exit or paired order behavior. Understand the trigger and execution conditions shown in Coinbase’s interface before relying on them.
- TWAP (time-weighted average price): A tool that works an order over time rather than submitting the full amount as one immediate market order. Review its configuration and current availability in Advanced before use.
Coinbase’s explanation of supported order behavior is in Understanding the order types. Features and availability may depend on the product, asset and jurisdiction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you still use GDAX APIs or old trading libraries?
Do not treat a GDAX API example or legacy client library as a ready-to-run guide for Coinbase Advanced. Coinbase’s API FAQ points to historical-rate documentation and cautions against frequent polling of historical rates. It also lists Node.js, GDAX Trading Library and Ruby client libraries while stating they are not actively maintained and support is limited. For automation, consult current Advanced API documentation and confirm that the relevant endpoints, authentication, permissions and SDKs remain supported before connecting software. See Coinbase’s API FAQ.

Before placing a trade
- Confirm that Coinbase Advanced and the asset you want to trade are supported in your region and account.
- Review the live fee schedule and the order details displayed before submission.
- Choose an order type based on its execution conditions, not on an assumption that a market or stop order guarantees a particular price.
- If you need old GDAX or Pro records, do not assume the former end-of-2023 history-access guidance still grants access; check current Coinbase support options.
- If you automate trading, verify current API documentation and library maintenance status instead of copying legacy GDAX instructions.
