In a 2013 Panorama investigation, BBC reporter Adam Littler worked as a picker at Amazon’s warehouse in Swansea, Wales. Contemporary accounts described a tightly timed, scanner-directed job and reported that he walked up to 11 miles during a 10.5-hour night shift. Public-health specialist Michael Marmot warned that the work’s characteristics could raise health risks; Amazon disputed that assessment. The report documented one person’s experience at one site—it did not prove that Amazon work causes mental illness or establish conditions across the company.
What Littler reported from the Swansea warehouse
Littler took an agency job as a picker for the BBC’s November 2013 Panorama investigation. Contemporary reports describe a handheld device directing him to items and a scanner recording his work. The device’s prompts, the pace of collection and the monitoring made the work feel highly controlled, according to accounts of the broadcast.
Littler described the role in stark terms: “We are machines, we are robots, we plug our scanner in, we’re holding it, but we might as well be plugging it into ourselves.” This was his characterization of the experience, not a measurement of every worker’s conditions.
The reported pace and shift
Reports of the assignment said pickers were expected to collect an order every 33 seconds. The Independent reported that Littler walked up to 11 miles, while GeekWire described his night shift as lasting 10.5 hours. These are details attributed to his particular assignment, not workforce-wide averages or the findings of a population study.

Contemporary coverage also described performance tracking and consequences associated with errors or low picking rates. It does not establish how often those consequences occurred or whether the same practices applied to all workers or shifts.
What the health warning did—and did not—establish
After reviewing footage, public-health specialist and work-stress expert Michael Marmot warned that characteristics of this kind of job could increase risks to mental and physical health. He said: “The characteristics of this type of job, the evidence shows increased risk of mental illness and physical illness.” He also argued that efficiency demands should be balanced against workers’ health and well-being.

That was an expert assessment of the described work and footage. The reporting does not identify a controlled study of Swansea workers, quantify illness among them, or show that Littler or other workers were diagnosed with a condition because of the job. The headline phrase “mental illness-inducing” is therefore stronger than what the reported evidence establishes.
Amazon’s response to the investigation
Amazon disputed Marmot’s health-risk conclusion. In its reported response, the company said the picking role was comparable to work in other industries and did not increase the risk of mental or physical illness. Amazon also described safety as its “number one priority.” The reports summarized the company’s position but do not provide a complete primary-source statement or identify the spokesperson by name and role.

The disagreement was about both scope and evidence: Marmot assessed the demands visible in the reported job, while Amazon made a broader claim about comparable work and risk. The available accounts do not resolve that dispute with a study of the Swansea workforce.

No. It is a record of one undercover assignment at one Welsh facility in 2013, not a current audit of Amazon warehouses. Later coverage—including a 2015 account of a different writer’s undercover work and a 2023 TIME report on survey and regulator findings at other facilities—concerns different people, places and periods. Those accounts may provide later context on warehouse work, but they cannot establish that the Swansea conditions persisted unchanged.

For a reader assessing the original claim, the most accurate conclusion is limited: Littler reported an intense, closely monitored picking job; Marmot warned that such characteristics could raise health risks; and Amazon rejected that conclusion. The report raised a workplace-health concern, but did not by itself prove that the job caused mental illness.
