Umar Patek launched a coffee business branded Ramu in Surabaya, Indonesia, in June 2025. Reports identify its products as robusta, arabica and spiced coffee, but do not establish whether the business is still operating or where its coffee can currently be purchased.
What coffee business did Umar Patek start?
The business was reported as Ramu, also called Ramu Kopi 1966. Reuters footage dated June 3, 2025, shows the product branding “KOPI REMPAH RAMU BY UMAR PATEK” in Surabaya, East Java. The Guardian also reported the launch there; Indonesian outlet Kompas described the business line as Ramu Kopi 1966 and named Hedon Estate as the launch venue.
Kompas reported that Ramu offered robusta, arabica and spiced coffee varieties. Reuters footage shows coffee products and a roasting machine, but neither those images nor the launch coverage confirm current stock or retail availability. Reuters video and transcript; The Guardian; Kompas.
How was the business set up?
Reuters reported Patek saying that a business mentor supplied green coffee beans, a roasting machine and tools for making ground coffee rather than giving him cash capital. According to his account in the Reuters transcript, he supplied products to a coffee shop owned by that mentor. Kompas reported that David Andreasmito handled management while Patek worked on developing flavors. These are details reported around the launch, not confirmation of the company’s present operations.

Why does the launch matter beyond coffee?
Patek was convicted for involvement in the 2002 Bali bombings. Reuters reported that the attacks killed 202 people, that Patek received a 20-year prison sentence in 2012, and that he was released on parole in 2022. Kompas gives his parole date as December 7, 2022. The Guardian describes the lasting trauma suffered by victims, and Reuters reported survivors’ reactions around the coffee launch.
The business launch should not be treated as proof that victims’ suffering has been resolved or as evidence, by itself, of rehabilitation. Reuters quoted Patek acknowledging that nothing could compare with victims’ experiences, including permanent disabilities, and saying he prayed for them and did not hesitate to apologize.
