A back-in-stock notification lets a shopper ask to be told when an unavailable item can be bought again. The store records the request for a particular product or variant and sends an alert when its configured inventory trigger says stock is available. It is not a purchase or a reservation: the shopper still has to return and complete checkout, and the item may sell out again.
How a back-in-stock notification works
- A product page shows a signup control such as “Notify me” when the item is unavailable.
- The shopper submits the contact detail needed for the chosen channel, such as an email address or phone number.
- The store or notification service associates the request with the relevant product or variant.
- When the configured inventory event or scheduled review detects availability, the system sends an alert with a link to the product page.
- The shopper checks current availability and, if stock remains, places an order through the usual checkout.
The delay between a stock change and an alert depends on the store’s integration and settings. Do not promise an instant message unless the specific implementation supports and has been configured for that behavior.
Plan the signup and notification rules
Choose which items can collect requests
Decide which products and variants should display the signup control. Keep the product page available if the item is expected to return, and make sure a request for one size, color, or other variant is not treated as interest in a different one.
Choose the channel and collect only what it needs
Email and SMS are common options in the documented examples; Klaviyo also describes WhatsApp options. Ask for the contact information needed for the selected channel rather than collecting extra details without a purpose. Klaviyo’s guide describes explicit consent and disclosure for its text-alert form. Wix advises treating a back-in-stock signup as permission for that alert, not as permission to add the shopper to general marketing. Legal and consent requirements depend on jurisdiction and implementation, so configure the form for the rules that apply to your business.

Set inventory conditions and scarce-stock controls
Check what counts as a restock in your system: a positive quantity, an increase at a particular inventory location, or a scheduled review may produce different results. Set a minimum quantity if appropriate and decide how many people should receive an alert when supply is limited. FIFO queues, recipient caps, or staggered sends can reduce the chance of notifying more shoppers than can reasonably buy.
Confirm the item is purchasable before sending
An alert should lead to a product page where the relevant item is actually available to buy. Check variant availability, inventory location rules, and checkout behavior before a message goes out; a positive inventory count alone may not reflect every store’s selling conditions.

Test a complete stock transition
- Choose a representative product and variant that is genuinely unavailable.
- Submit a test signup using the intended channel and verify that the request is associated with the right item.
- Change inventory through the same process your store uses for a real restock.
- Confirm the trigger fires under the configured conditions, the message links to the correct product, and the item can be purchased.
- Review available signup, send, and delivery reporting, and investigate any gap between the inventory change and the alert.

Check the current documentation and configuration for your specific commerce platform and provider. These examples illustrate different approaches; they do not establish that every feature works on every platform.

Inventory settings can silently prevent a trigger from working. In addition to checking “Continue selling when out of stock” where relevant, verify that the provider is monitoring the correct variant and inventory location and that its trigger conditions match the way your store records stock.

Set shopper expectations: alerts do not reserve stock
A restock alert is not a hold. Wix describes restocked items as first come, first served, and a large waitlist can exceed the quantity available. Avoid wording such as “your item is waiting” unless your store actually reserves inventory. If supply is tight, set a recipient cap or send in stages, and make clear that the shopper must still check availability and complete checkout.
A back-in-stock alert is also different from a preorder. An alert collects contact details so the shopper can be notified later; it does not collect payment for a future shipment. Wix suggests using an alert when the arrival date is uncertain and considering a preorder when the business can commit to a date.

How to compare notification options
- Platform fit: Check whether the option is built into your store, supports your ecommerce platform, or needs a custom catalog or API integration.
- Trigger behavior: Confirm whether it responds to inventory events or scheduled checks, and whether it handles variants and stock locations as you expect.
- Channel and consent: Verify that it supports the channel you want and that the signup form captures the appropriate consent and disclosure.
- Controls for limited stock: Look for thresholds, FIFO ordering, recipient caps, or staggered sends if restocks may be smaller than the waitlist.
- Measurement and operations: Review what signup, send, delivery, and troubleshooting information is available.
There is no universally best option established by these examples. Choose based on your store platform, how inventory is updated, the channel your customers want, and the controls your team needs to operate the process reliably.
