The announcement described a deeper partnership with a company already selling and servicing BYD vehicles in Thailand; it did not establish that the transaction later closed or confirm current ownership.
What BYD announced
Reuters reported that BYD would acquire a 20% stake in RÊVER Automotive, while CnEVPost reported that the companies signed a share purchase agreement on July 6, 2024. The available coverage documents the agreement and announcement, but does not verify subsequent completion. It is therefore more accurate to describe this as an announced investment than as a confirmed change in current ownership.
That is a different arrangement from a standard distributor relationship: BYD announced an equity investment in the Thai business that distributes its vehicles. The sources do not specify the price paid, governance rights, or other detailed terms of the proposed stake.
RÊVER’s role in Thailand
RÊVER was not a new partner brought in for this announcement. In its August 8, 2022 launch announcement, the company described itself as BYD’s authorized distributor and after-sales service provider in Thailand. It said it planned to invest more than 3 billion baht and develop a nationwide dealer and service network; those were launch-era statements and plans, not confirmation that every planned location was completed.

Reuters reported in July 2024 that RÊVER had more than 100 showrooms in Thailand and had launched BYD sales in 2022. The showroom count is a report from that time, not a current figure.
Why the announcement drew attention
The investment was announced in the same week BYD opened its first Southeast Asian factory, in Thailand. Reuters reported planned annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles and expected employment of 10,000 people. Those were contemporaneous plans, not figures for actual output or jobs achieved.

The timing put two parts of BYD’s Thailand presence in view: local vehicle manufacturing and a local partner responsible for distribution and after-sales service. Together, they show the operational context for the investment, but the announcement does not prove that the factory opening caused the stake purchase or establish a broader motive beyond the companies’ stated partnership aims.
Reuters also reported Counterpoint Research’s estimate that BYD held 46% of Thailand’s EV segment in the first quarter of 2024 and ranked third in passenger cars. That is a historical, segment-specific estimate—not a current market-share figure.
What the investment could mean—and what remains unconfirmed
BYD’s Asia-Pacific auto sales general manager, Liu Xueliang, told Reuters the companies were deepening their partnership “to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and contribute to Thailand’s transition towards a more sustainable future.” CnEVPost reported that the companies intended to expand cooperation beyond passenger vehicles to commercial vehicles. That wider scope was an announced intention, not evidence that the expansion took place.

- Distribution: RÊVER was already BYD’s authorized Thai distributor and after-sales service provider before the investment announcement.
- Regional footprint: The Thai factory and distributor relationship provide context for BYD’s Southeast Asian operations, but the announcement alone does not establish the investment’s effect on sales, production, or expansion elsewhere in the region.
For a personal-finance reader, this is corporate news rather than a consumer offer: it does not announce a vehicle price, a customer discount, or an investment product. The sources also do not establish a current dealer count, factory output, market share, or later completion of the stake purchase.
