DHgate climbed from No. 352 to No. 3 on the U.S. iPhone App Store’s free-app charts between April 11 and April 14, 2025, as tariff news and viral TikTok videos drove a burst of interest in buying from Chinese marketplaces. The spike showed how quickly trade-policy debate can redirect consumer attention. It did not establish that DHgate had become a lasting top U.S. shopping app—or that shopping there could sidestep import charges.
What happened to DHgate’s U.S. app ranking?
DHgate’s rise was a short, sharply defined App Store event. According to Appfigures data reported by TechCrunch on April 14, 2025, the app ranked No. 352 among the U.S. App Store’s top free iPhone apps excluding games on Friday, April 11. It was No. 6 on Sunday, April 13, and No. 3 on Monday, April 14. On April 14 it was also No. 3 overall among free iPhone apps, including games.
Those rankings refer to the U.S. iPhone App Store chart, not every app store, all mobile downloads, shopping-app sales, or the number of people who continued using DHgate. An app-chart jump is a measure of momentum, not proof of revenue, customer loyalty, order volume, or satisfaction.
How large was the download surge?
Appfigures’ estimates, as reported by TechCrunch, show how quickly interest rose. The figures are app installations, not purchases or company-reported sales.

| April 13, 2025, U.S. iOS users | About 65,100 | 940% above the U.S. iOS 30-day average |
The April 13 figures cover iOS; Android data for that date was not available in TechCrunch’s report. The estimates came from Appfigures, not an audited DHgate disclosure.
Why did tariffs and TikTok become part of the story?
The spike came amid the 2025 escalation in U.S.–China trade tensions. TechCrunch reported on April 14, 2025, that President Donald Trump had increased tariffs on Chinese imports by 145% at that point in the policy dispute. That is a dated figure, not a current general tariff rate.
At the same time, TikTok videos from Chinese suppliers and manufacturers circulated claims about how goods are made and where they originate. Some creators argued that products marketed as European or luxury goods were made, at least in part, in China, and suggested consumers could buy comparable items directly from Chinese suppliers for less. DHgate offered a familiar consumer-facing place to look for products after those claims caught viewers’ attention.

- DISPLAY: Immersive viewing on a 6.7-inch super-bright 120Hz display with powerful stereo speakers and Bass Boost for cinematic entertainment.

- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
The sequence—tariff news, viral videos, consumer curiosity and app downloads—is consistent with the timing, but it does not prove tariffs alone caused the increase. TikTok content was often promotional or simplified, and a seller’s claim about a factory relationship is not independent evidence. TechCrunch also reported that one prominent creator’s account was later taken down, though reuploads and stitches remained.
What DHgate is—and what a listing does not prove
DHgate is a cross-border e-commerce marketplace where businesses and consumers can find suppliers selling goods from China and other markets. It is a platform, not necessarily the manufacturer of the product in a listing. TechCrunch reported that DHgate’s website claimed a catalog of more than 30 million products across categories including electronics, home goods, toys, shoes, apparel, jewelry, health and beauty. That was the company’s stated catalog figure, not an independently audited inventory count.
A listing does not establish that its seller is an original supplier to a Western brand, that an item is authentic, or that it matches the materials and quality of a branded product. Prices can be low for many reasons: a product may be generic, use different materials, have less quality control, or lack brand licensing. Seller reliability, product quality, shipping and return terms can vary.

“Made in China” does not authenticate a luxury product
Manufacturing can involve multiple factories, countries and stages, including component production, assembly, finishing and packaging. A viral video saying that a recognizable brand’s goods are made in China does not show that the speaker works with that brand, that a DHgate seller supplied it, or that a particular listing is genuine. Nor does it establish where the entire production chain takes place.
It helps to distinguish among several kinds of listings:
Recommended Free Tools
- Authentic branded goods: products made and sold with the brand’s authorization.
- Generic or unbranded goods: products that may share a general style without using protected branding.
- “Dupes” or lookalikes: alternatives promoted as resembling a branded item; the label alone does not establish whether branding or intellectual property is being infringed.
- Counterfeits: unauthorized products using a brand’s protected name, logo, packaging or other distinctive marks.
- Alleged factory overruns or seconds: seller claims that buyers generally cannot verify from a listing alone.
Do not treat a seller’s “factory-direct” story, a low price, or a social-media video as authentication. Claims that a specific luxury item costs only a small amount to make need reliable documentation; a viral assertion is not enough.

Does buying through DHgate avoid U.S. tariffs?
No general rule makes a DHgate purchase tariff-free. A marketplace transaction can still result in an import into the United States. The applicable treatment may depend on the product’s origin and classification, its declared value, the shipping arrangement and the trade rules in force. Depending on the transaction, a buyer may encounter duties, taxes, brokerage charges or carrier collection at delivery; some orders may show charges at checkout instead.
Shipping routes also matter. An individual parcel sent from China, an item shipped from a U.S. warehouse, and a China-made item already imported into U.S. inventory are not necessarily handled the same way. De minimis treatment and other exemptions can change, so a marketplace’s location or checkout price is not enough to determine what a particular order will cost. Check the current terms for the order and shipping method before paying; do not assume a listed price includes every import-related charge.

| Platform | Typical role | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| DHgate | Cross-border marketplace used by businesses and consumers to find suppliers and products. | Seller, authenticity, quality, shipping and return experience can vary by listing. |
| Taobao | Alibaba’s large consumer marketplace, historically more focused on China. | Its U.S. chart visibility rose during the same period: TechCrunch reported it reached No. 10 overall among free iPhone apps. That ranking does not establish lasting U.S. usage. |
| Alibaba.com | Business sourcing and supplier discovery, often for wholesale or bulk orders. | Minimum quantities and supplier verification can matter; it is not simply a consumer retail substitute. |
| Temu | Consumer-oriented marketplace emphasizing low-priced, app-driven shopping. | A consumer-facing experience does not remove the need to assess product safety, delivery and returns. |
| Shein | Fashion- and apparel-focused consumer shopping. | It is a narrower fit than a general supplier marketplace for electronics or industrial sourcing. |
| Amazon | Broad retail marketplace with established U.S. shopping and fulfillment options. | Where available, domestic fulfillment and returns may be more predictable; a higher listed price is not the only cost to compare. |
What to check before placing an order
Cross-border shopping can offer access to a broad range of suppliers and low listed prices, but the buyer may need to do more work on verification, delivery, total cost and dispute resolution than with a domestic retailer. Before ordering, check:
- Seller record: Look at transaction history, time on the platform, review volume and recent feedback.
- Review evidence: Customer photos and comments about the exact variant are more useful than generic ratings alone; reviews can still be incomplete or misleading.
- Specifications: Confirm materials, dimensions, sizing, voltage, compatibility and included accessories rather than relying on a product image.
- Shipping: Check the delivery estimate, tracking, carrier and whether duties are prepaid. Estimates may not include customs delays.
- Returns: Find out where the item must be sent, who pays return shipping and what evidence a refund requires. An overseas return can cost more than the item.
- Total cost: Consider item price, shipping, possible tax or duty, brokerage, and the cost of a return or replacement.
- Brand claims: Avoid listings using unauthorized logos, protected names or counterfeit packaging; do not rely on “factory-direct” claims as proof of authenticity.
- Payment: Use a payment method with a dispute process, and keep payment on the platform rather than sending money directly to a seller.
- Safety and compliance: Be especially cautious with electrical products, batteries, children’s goods, cosmetics, supplements, medical devices and protective equipment.
- App privacy: Download the app only through an official app store and review its current permissions and privacy disclosures.
Common problems include receiving a visually similar but materially different product, finding that photos were reused, discovering that reviews describe another variant, or facing customs delays or a shipment hold. A low sticker price can also lose its appeal once shipping, import charges and possible return costs are included.
What the April 2025 surge does—and does not—show
DHgate’s brief climb showed how a trade-policy dispute and viral claims about supply chains could quickly turn into shopping curiosity. It also coincided with Taobao’s rise on the U.S. iPhone chart, suggesting interest extended beyond one app. But a burst of downloads is not evidence that DHgate permanently displaced established shopping platforms, that its products are authentic, or that buying through it escapes tariffs. The event is best understood as a snapshot of consumer attention during a turbulent trade-policy moment.
