CommScope completed its acquisition of ARRIS International on April 4, 2019, in an all-cash deal reported at approximately $7.4 billion, including debt-related amounts. The purchase also brought Ruckus Networks and the ICX switching business under CommScope because ARRIS had acquired them from Brocade in 2017. The transaction was announced on November 8, 2018.
The deal at a glance
| Term | Reported detail |
|---|---|
| Buyer | CommScope |
| Target | ARRIS International |
| Announcement | November 8, 2018, as reported by CRN |
| Completion | April 4, 2019, confirmed in CommScope’s announcement |
| Consideration | All cash; $31.75 per ARRIS share, according to CRN’s contemporaneous report |
| Reported transaction value | Approximately $7.4 billion, including debt repayment or assumption; this is not simply the cash paid to ARRIS shareholders, as described by CRN |
CommScope’s closing announcement confirmed that the transaction was complete. It expanded a communications-infrastructure supplier into a broader mix of broadband, video, wireless, and enterprise-networking businesses.
How Ruckus became part of CommScope
CommScope did not buy Ruckus directly from Ruckus in 2019. The ownership chain ran through three transactions: Brocade acquired Ruckus Wireless in 2016; ARRIS acquired Ruckus and Brocade’s ICX switching business in 2017; then CommScope acquired ARRIS in 2019. ARRIS announced the Ruckus and ICX purchase for approximately $800 million in its transaction announcement.
That history explains why contemporary coverage sometimes described the transaction as an “ARRIS-Ruckus” acquisition. Legally, the 2019 deal was CommScope’s purchase of ARRIS and its assets, including the Ruckus and ICX businesses.

What the companies brought together
ARRIS: broadband, video, and service-provider equipment
ARRIS added products and services for broadband access, cable and telecommunications networks, video infrastructure, cloud and networking, and customer-premises equipment. Its business also included wireless products and related professional and support services. Those capabilities connected CommScope more deeply with cable operators, telecom providers, and other service-provider customers.
Ruckus and ICX: enterprise wireless and switching
Ruckus added Wi-Fi and wireless LAN capabilities used in enterprise, campus, hospitality, education, and venue networks. The accompanying ICX business contributed Ethernet switching. Ruckus also brought network-management software and channel relationships serving enterprises and managed-service providers.

- Approved for Cox, Spectrum and Xfinity internet along with other US cable internet providers. Is NOT compatible with ATT, CenturyLink, Verizon, Froniter or other Fiber Optic, DSL or Satellite internet service providers.
- Does NOT include Wi-Fi and Does NOT support cable digital voice service.
- The SURFboard SB8200 is compatible with major U.S. cable internet providers including Cox, Spectrum, Xfinity and others. It is approved for cable internet speed plans up to 1 Gbps. Check your cable ISP website to confirm compatibility.
- 32 downstream x 8 upstream DOCSIS 3.0 bonded channels, or 2 downstream x 2 upstream OFDM DOCSIS 3.1 channels.
- Two 1-Gigabit Ethernet ports
The portfolio logic was complementary: broadband and service-provider infrastructure could sit alongside enterprise Wi-Fi and switching, creating opportunities to offer more components of a wired and wireless network. That potential did not mean products, support systems, or road maps were immediately unified when the deal closed.
CommScope’s strategic case—and what was still a forecast
CommScope presented the acquisition as a way to gain scale, broaden its portfolio, increase research and development capacity, and pursue growth in broadband, 5G, mobility, and the Internet of Things. The company’s rationale also included selling complementary products through its expanded customer and partner relationships.

At the time of closing, CommScope cited a combined total addressable market above $60 billion, expected nearly $1 billion in cash flow during the first full year with ARRIS, and estimated average annualized research and development spending of about $800 million. These were company estimates and forward-looking expectations reported by CRN, not results established by the acquisition’s completion. A projected addressable market is not revenue, and an expected cash-flow figure is not proof that the target was achieved.
Financing and leadership
The acquisition was structured as an all-cash transaction, with ARRIS shareholders set to receive $31.75 per share. The often-quoted $7.4 billion value includes debt-related amounts, so it should not be read as the equity purchase price alone. CRN reported that Carlyle Group committed approximately $1 billion in minority investment to help finance the deal.

ARRIS CEO Bruce McClelland became CommScope’s chief operating officer after closing, according to CRN. That appointment marked an organizational change, but it did not by itself establish how completely the businesses would be integrated or how the combined company would perform.

Potential benefits
- Customers could potentially source more broadband, video, Wi-Fi, switching, and network-infrastructure products from one larger supplier.
- Distributors, integrators, and managed-service providers could have opportunities to pair products across service-provider and enterprise networks.
- The companies’ stated investment scale could support broader engineering and product development if the combined business directed resources effectively.
Questions and risks
- Customers and channel partners would need clarity on product road maps, support contacts, licensing, and channel programs as operations changed.
- Overlapping products could lead to portfolio consolidation or uncertainty about migration paths.
- Combining service-provider operations with Ruckus’s enterprise and channel-oriented business presented integration challenges; a larger organization could also be less nimble.
- One supplier spanning more network categories might simplify procurement, but it could also increase vendor concentration for customers.
- The deal’s financing and integration demands could constrain flexibility, while market-size and cash-flow projections remained uncertain until supported by results.
These were practical considerations raised by the structure and ambitions of the transaction, not proof of later customer outcomes. Closing established ownership; it did not establish successful integration, realized synergies, customer satisfaction, or lasting market-share gains.

Why the “once-in-a-lifetime” label needs context
“Once-in-a-lifetime” was deal-era executive rhetoric, not an independently verified measure of the acquisition’s value. The more concrete significance was the breadth of the combination: CommScope added ARRIS’s broadband and video reach and, through ARRIS, Ruckus Wi-Fi and ICX switching. Whether that breadth produced durable advantages depended on execution after closing.
