“Not yet shipped” means Amazon or the seller has not confirmed dispatch; it does not mean the order is lost or canceled. First check the delivery estimate and who is selling and fulfilling the item. If the promised date has passed, contact the responsible party and ask for a firm date or cancellation and a refund. If you no longer want an order that is still awaiting shipment, try canceling it from Your Orders.
What “Not Yet Shipped” means
This is a pre-shipment status, not a carrier-tracking update. Amazon’s seller documentation distinguishes order states such as pending, unshipped, canceled, and shipped; a pending order can involve payment verification, while an unshipped order has not been confirmed as shipped. The labels shown to customers—such as “Order received,” “Preparing for shipment,” “Shipping soon,” or “Delivery date pending”—can vary by order and interface. Amazon’s order-management overview describes seller-side status categories.
A status alone does not tell you whether the order is late. Compare the current estimate with the delivery date shown when you ordered. An estimated date is not necessarily a guaranteed date; rely on stronger wording only if the specific order explicitly promises guaranteed delivery.
Check the order before deciding what to do
- Sign in and open Your Orders.
- Select the order and review Order Details, Track Package, or the equivalent option available for it.
- Record the order number, item and quantity, seller, “Sold by” and “Shipped by” details, original and current delivery estimates, status, and any delay notice. Save the order confirmation and a screenshot if the date has changed or disappeared.
- Check whether the item is in stock, a preorder or backorder, or made to order. Review whether the address or payment method needs attention.
- For an order with multiple items, check each item separately; they may have different fulfillment statuses.
Amazon’s seller guidance says a pending order can involve payment verification. A seller-facing forum post describes some pending orders remaining in processing for as long as 21 days, but that is not a universal consumer timeline or a promise about every Amazon order. Cancel an order that has not shipped
- Open Your Orders and select the order.
- Choose “Cancel items” or the cancellation option shown for that order.
- Select the item or items, choose a reason, and submit the request.
- Check for a cancellation confirmation email or a changed order status. A submitted request is not the same as a confirmed cancellation.
The exact controls can vary. Cancellation is generally available for unshipped orders in seller-side guidance, but a missing button does not prove the package has shipped or guarantee that cancellation is still possible. Processing may have started, shipment may have been confirmed before tracking appeared, or only some items may be eligible. Amazon’s seller guidance distinguishes cancellation before shipment confirmation from refund or return handling after shipment is confirmed. Read the seller-side discussion.
If there is no cancellation button
- Check the order in a desktop browser as well as the app, and see whether individual items can be canceled separately.
- Use the order’s Help or Customer Service path and ask whether shipment has been confirmed, whether the order can still be canceled, and what remedy applies if it cannot.
- For a marketplace order, use the seller-contact or messaging option on the order page. State that the item has not been delivered and you are requesting cancellation before shipment.
- Keep copies of your message, any response, and the order’s dates and status.
If the order has entered fulfillment, ask what to do next—such as follow the seller’s return instructions or, after shipment, use the applicable return process. Do not assume refusing delivery will be the fastest route to a refund.

When contacting support, give the order number, the original promised date, the current status, and what outcome you want. For example: “My order [order number] still shows ‘not yet shipped.’ The original estimated delivery date was [date]. Please confirm whether it has shipped and provide the current delivery date, or cancel the order and process the applicable refund.”
If the promised date has passed
- Save the order confirmation and a screenshot of the current status and date.
- Contact Amazon for an Amazon-sold order. For a third-party seller order, message the seller through Amazon; contact Amazon as well if fulfillment or delivery is handled by Amazon or the seller does not resolve the issue.
- Ask for a firm explanation and delivery date. If you no longer want the item or the seller cannot ship as promised, request cancellation and a refund.
- Keep the response and any cancellation or refund confirmation. If the order has shipped, switch to the tracking and delivery process rather than treating it as an unshipped order.
Do not wait indefinitely for a marketplace seller after the promised date has passed. At the same time, a late estimate does not automatically mean the order qualifies for a credit, damages, or an immediate refund through Amazon’s interface.

What U.S. law says about delayed online orders
For most U.S. merchandise orders placed online, by mail, or by phone, the FTC’s Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule generally requires a seller to ship within the time it represented. If no shipping time was stated, the rule generally uses 30 days. If the seller cannot meet the applicable deadline, it generally must notify the buyer of the delay and give the buyer a choice to agree to the delay or cancel for a prompt refund. The rule concerns the seller’s shipping, delay-notice, cancellation, and refund obligations; it does not guarantee an automatic credit or instant resolution through Amazon’s interface. Exceptions and transaction-specific facts can matter. Read the FTC rule and its business guide.
If a seller is required to refund you for unshipped merchandise, store credit is not a substitute simply because it is convenient for the seller. See the FTC guidance on undelivered or unordered products and FTC online-shopping advice.

Check the charge before contacting your bank
A pending card authorization is different from a posted charge. Payment timing can vary by order type, seller, fulfillment method, payment method, and jurisdiction, so a pre-shipment charge is not automatically an error. Check whether the transaction is pending or posted and compare its amount with the order lines, tax, and shipping.
If the order is canceled, wait for the cancellation or refund confirmation and the timeframe Amazon provides. Contact Amazon if a posted charge remains after that timeframe. A card issuer is a later route for an unrecognized or improperly retained charge, not the first step in an ordinary cancellation. A bank dispute can complicate a refund Amazon or the seller could otherwise handle directly.

If the item has shipped but has not arrived
Once shipment is confirmed, this is a delivery problem rather than a pre-shipment cancellation problem. Check the order’s tracking and follow the delivery options shown there. For a marketplace order that was shipped but not received, an A-to-z Guarantee claim may be available if the order meets Amazon’s eligibility and timing requirements. Special cases that can change the answer
- Preorders: The date may reflect release or availability rather than ordinary dispatch timing. Check the product listing and order confirmation.
- Backorders: The seller may have accepted the order without immediate inventory. Use the stated availability and delivery information to assess the promise.
- Customized or made-to-order items: Processing may take longer, and cancellation or return terms may differ.
- International orders: Customs, import requirements, and local consumer law can affect delivery and remedies; the U.S. FTC rule is not a universal statement of rights worldwide.
- Digital products or subscriptions: A physical-shipment status may not apply. For a recurring order, check the relevant order or subscription controls.
- Amazon Pay purchases on another merchant’s site: Contact the merchant for cancellation or a refund; Amazon Pay says it cannot cancel or change the merchant’s order on the customer’s behalf. Amazon Pay cancellation guidance.
If you still want the item
You do not have to cancel just because the status has not changed. If the estimate is still acceptable, waiting may make sense, particularly when the price or inventory is hard to replace. If the date has passed, ask for a firm update first. Reordering from another seller or buying locally may help if the item is urgent, but the new price may be higher and the original order could still ship. Avoid placing a duplicate order until cancellation is confirmed unless you are prepared to receive and resolve two orders.
If it ships after you requested cancellation
Check whether Amazon confirmed the cancellation or merely received the request. Save the confirmation email. If the item arrives after a confirmed cancellation, contact Amazon or the seller before opening, disposing of, or returning it, and follow their instructions. A refusal at the door is not guaranteed to produce the quickest refund.
