Jerome H. Powell did win another four-year term as Federal Reserve chair—but that appointment began in May 2022 and ended on May 15, 2026. Kevin M. Warsh became chair on May 22, 2026, with a term scheduled to run through May 21, 2030.
Powell did not leave the Federal Reserve entirely. He remains a member of the Board of Governors, where his separate term is scheduled to end on January 31, 2028.
What happened to Jerome Powell’s second term?
President Joe Biden renominated Powell for a second term as Fed chair in November 2021. The Senate confirmed him on May 12, 2022, and Powell was sworn in for the new chair term on May 23, 2022.
That four-year chair term was scheduled to end on May 15, 2026. After the scheduled term ended, the Federal Reserve Board named Powell chair pro tempore while the transition to his successor was completed.

Why the headline can be misleading
“Another four years” referred to Powell’s 2022 reappointment. It does not describe a new appointment currently keeping him in charge of the Federal Reserve.
The confusion comes from two different appointments:
- Chair term: The Fed chair is appointed for four years.
- Board governor term: A Federal Reserve governor serves a separate 14-year term.
Leaving the chair’s office does not automatically remove someone from the Board of Governors. Powell’s Board term continues after his chairmanship, which is why the Federal Reserve lists him as Governor Jerome H. Powell rather than chairman.
As of August 8, 2026, the Federal Reserve lists Kevin Warsh as chairman and Jerome Powell as a governor.

What this means for personal finances
A change in Fed chair does not automatically change mortgage rates, savings-account yields, credit-card APRs, or investment returns on the day of the handover. Those prices respond to several forces, including inflation, employment, Treasury yields, market expectations, bank funding costs, and the Federal Open Market Committee’s interest-rate decisions.
Still, a chair transition matters because the Fed controls monetary policy and communicates its view of the economy. Consumers should watch the policy rate and the direction of rate expectations rather than relying on the chair’s name alone.
Borrowers
People with variable-rate debt may eventually see changes in borrowing costs when the Fed changes its target range or when market rates adjust. The most direct exposure usually comes from:
- Credit cards with variable APRs
- Home-equity lines of credit
- Some private student loans
- Adjustable-rate mortgages
Credit-card issuers often reprice variable APRs after changes in their benchmark. A Fed move is therefore a reason to check the APR and interest charge on the next statement—not a reason to assume every loan rate will move by exactly the same amount.
Fixed-rate mortgages are different. They are influenced more by longer-term Treasury yields and mortgage-market conditions than by the Fed’s overnight policy rate. A new chair can affect mortgage rates indirectly through market expectations, but there is no guaranteed one-for-one move.

Savers
Online savings accounts, money-market deposit accounts, and certificates of deposit may offer higher yields when short-term interest rates are high. Banks can lower those rates if the Fed cuts rates or if they no longer need to compete as aggressively for deposits.
A sensible response is to compare the account’s annual percentage yield, withdrawal rules, minimum balance, and insurance coverage. A headline about the Fed should not lead you to move emergency savings into a riskier investment simply to chase a temporary yield.

Investors
Stocks and bonds can move before a policy decision because markets price in expected future rates. A change in leadership may produce volatility if investors expect a different approach to inflation, employment, or the balance-sheet policy. That does not make short-term trading a reliable response.
For long-term investors, the practical basics remain more important:
- Keep near-term spending money out of volatile assets.
- Match bond duration to your time horizon and risk tolerance.
- Maintain a diversified portfolio rather than betting on one Fed outcome.
- Rebalance according to a written plan instead of reacting to a single announcement.
Powell’s position after leaving the chair
Powell remains a governor through January 31, 2028, according to his Federal Reserve biography. As a governor, he can continue to participate in the Board’s work and, subject to the applicable rules and membership, in monetary-policy decisions. That role is different from setting the agenda and representing the institution as chair.

When a story says a person was “reappointed” or will serve “another four years,” check which office the date refers to. The following distinctions prevent most errors:
- Confirm the office. Is the person being appointed chair, vice chair, or governor?
- Check the effective date. Senate confirmation, swearing-in, and the start of the term may occur on different dates.
- Separate the chair term from the Board term. One can end while the other continues.
- Look for an interim designation. A chair pro tempore may serve during a transition without changing the scheduled end date of the previous regular term.
- Use the Federal Reserve’s current Board listing. It is more reliable than an undated article or social-media post.
The corrected version of the headline
A current and accurate summary would be:
Jerome Powell’s second four-year term as Federal Reserve chair began in May 2022 and ended on May 15, 2026. After briefly serving as chair pro tempore, he was succeeded by Kevin Warsh on May 22, 2026. Powell remains a Federal Reserve governor until his Board term is scheduled to expire on January 31, 2028.
For household finances, the key question is not simply who occupies the chair. It is how the Federal Reserve’s policy decisions affect the rates on your debt, deposits, and investments—and whether your financial plan can handle more than one interest-rate scenario.

Who is the Federal Reserve chair now?
Kevin M. Warsh became Federal Reserve chair on May 22, 2026. His chair term is scheduled to end on May 21, 2030.
Is Jerome Powell still at the Federal Reserve?
Yes. Powell remains a member of the Board of Governors. His separate governor term is scheduled to end on January 31, 2028.
Does a new Fed chair immediately change mortgage or savings rates?
No. Mortgage rates, deposit yields, and other consumer rates depend on market expectations, inflation, economic conditions, bank pricing, and the Fed’s policy decisions. A leadership change can influence expectations but does not automatically reset every rate.
Why did Powell serve as chair pro tempore after his term ended?
The Federal Reserve Board named Powell chair pro tempore on May 15, 2026, to cover the transition until Warsh took the oath on May 22. This temporary role should not be confused with an extension of Powell’s regular four-year chair term.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Powell’s “another four years” refers to his 2022 reappointment, not a current chairmanship. His regular chair term ended May 15, 2026; Kevin Warsh took over on May 22, 2026. Powell remains a Fed governor, and consumers should focus on actual interest-rate decisions and market conditions when assessing loans, savings, and investments.
