It links farmers and agricultural value-chain businesses with agronomic support, farm data collection, and independent verification. BASF’s goal of cutting emissions per ton of selected crops by 30% by 2030 is a target, not a reported global result; the measured figures it publicized in 2025 relate to one Irish barley project.
What is BASF’s Global Carbon Farming Program?
It is BASF Agricultural Solutions’ framework for helping farmers adopt practices intended to improve soil health, store more carbon in soil, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The launch announcement described a portfolio of seeds and traits, crop protection, digital farming, and fertilizer management. BASF’s current materials also describe support for planning and measuring projects and for value-chain businesses tracking progress toward Scope 3 targets.
The program is not simply a carbon-credit offer. Its described process connects changes in farm management to baseline data, ongoing measurement, and independent verification. Whether a project produces a verified result—and whether farmers receive revenue—depends on the project’s practices, data, and verification.
How does the farmer process work?
- Identify a field and provide farm information. BASF says farmers supply the field location, a farm-management shapefile, and information about crops and inputs used during the previous three years.
- Establish a baseline. BASF says it arranges soil sampling to measure baseline soil carbon and determines average crop-production emissions.
- Select and adopt practices. Farmers choose and implement new practices with personalized agronomic advice. Cover crops are one possible practice, but the appropriate species and rotation depend on local conditions.
- Track results. BASF says it collects and tracks data through xarvio, comparing intervention-year data with the baseline.
- Verify the project. BASF says its program applies Verra’s agricultural protocol VM0042 and works with SustainCERT as an independent validation and verification body. Independent verifiers assess measured emissions savings and/or added soil carbon.
These steps do not mean every enrolled field qualifies for credits or that a specific quantity or payment is guaranteed. A farmer considering participation should clarify which practices are eligible, what data and field history are required, how verification works, and how any resulting value is shared.

How do businesses participate?
For agricultural value-chain businesses, BASF describes working with existing farmer groups to establish a baseline, choose interventions, design projects that can scale, and support implementation. Third-party audits and independent registries are used to report verified impacts. BASF says those impacts can support a company’s progress reporting against Scope 3 targets.
When comparing a project with another carbon-farming offer, check the eligible geography and crops, baseline requirements, farmer support, methodology, verifier and registry, and how benefits are allocated. Also distinguish value-chain reductions or Verified Impact Units from offset credits: they are not interchangeable claims, and BASF’s materials describe project roles as dependent on geography.

What targets and results has BASF reported?
BASF’s 2030 target
BASF states a goal of reducing greenhouse-gas emissions per ton of crop produced by 30% by 2030 for wheat, soy, rice, canola, and corn. This is a company target, not evidence that the reduction has already been achieved across those crops or the program as a whole. BASF outlines the goal on its Climate-Smart Agriculture page.
The Irish barley project
In a March 2025 joint release, BASF and Boortmalt reported that their Irish barley project generated Europe’s first Verified Impact Units from reduced and removed on-farm greenhouse-gas emissions. They said farmers used practices including cover crops, SustainCERT independently verified the result, and participating farmers received additional revenue. The release reported average savings of 2.3 tons of CO₂e per hectare and an almost 90% reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions for that project. Those figures describe the Irish barley project only; they are not a general estimate for other farms, crops, or regions.

- Accurate Soil pH Testing: Dewildetradingco Soil pH Test Strips offer measurements of soil pH levels (pH 3.5-9). As an essential tool for every gardener and grower, these test strips help determine the optimal pH for various plants, such as outdoor plants, indoor plants, gardens, grass lawns, fruit trees, flowers, vegetables, and forest shrubs.
- User-Friendly Testing Procedure: The testing process is simple and efficient. Mix the sample soil with water, let the solution sit for 30 minutes, dip one strip into the solution for 3 seconds, and then hold it horizontally for 60 seconds. Compare the results against the provided color chart on the bottle for quick and reliable readings.
- Cost-Effective and Versatile: With 100 Soil PH checker strips included in each package, Dewildetradingco provides a cost-effective solution for soil testing. It caters to various planting needs, offering valuable insights for a wide range of horticultural applications.
- Optimize Plant Health and Growth: Maintaining the correct pH is crucial for optimal plant growth and bountiful yields. Dewildetradingco Soil pH Test Strips enable gardeners and growers to adjust their soil conditions, ensuring nutrient availability and preventing wasteful spending on ineffective amendments.
- Convenient On-the-Go Monitoring: The Dewildetradingco Soil pH Test Strips are designed for portability, allowing gardeners to perform quick soil testing in various locations. As an essential tool in every gardener's soil tester kit, these pH strips help ensure thriving plant life and efficient resource management.
The BASF–Boortmalt release also notes that changing practices can require farmers to gain new knowledge and obtain inputs such as cover-crop seed. Buying seed alone does not enroll a farm, satisfy a project protocol, or guarantee credits.
Another BASF example
BASF also highlights a U.S. Biofuel Carbon Intensity project with Anew Climate, intended to connect farmers, retail agronomists, and biorefineries around low-carbon-intensity grain. BASF’s program material does not provide quantified outcomes for that project.

What should farmers understand about possible earnings?
Carbon farming may create additional value when a project’s measured impact is verified and connected to a buyer or value-chain program, but the available descriptions do not establish a standard payment, credit amount, or guaranteed earnings for an individual farmer. Before committing, ask who pays for sampling and verification, what happens if the measured outcome falls short, which party owns or reports the environmental claim, and how revenue or other benefits are divided.
For BASF’s explanation of field requirements and carbon-credit verification, see its farmer and carbon-credit page. Its broader Global Carbon Farming Program page describes the program structure, while the agricultural value-chain page explains the business-facing approach. BASF’s December 2021 launch announcement and its March 2025 release with Boortmalt provide the dated statements and project figures.
