Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) Day is an annual recognition observance held on May 24. It honors the people who inspect, maintain, and repair aircraft, and the date marks the birthday of Charles “Charlie” Taylor, the machinist who built the engine used in the Wright brothers’ first powered flight. The observance recognizes essential work; it is not a federal holiday or a mechanic certification.
What is Aviation Maintenance Technician Day?
AMT Day is a day to recognize aviation maintenance professionals and the work that keeps aircraft safe and serviceable. The FAA says a U.S. congressional resolution establishing the observance passed in 2008. Celebrations have taken place at fixed-base operators (FBOs), schools, and maintenance facilities, according to the FAA’s May/June 2011 account.
The observance does not grant a license or certification. It is a recognition day for a skilled workforce whose work is less visible to passengers than a pilot’s but necessary to aviation.
Why is AMT Day celebrated on May 24?
May 24 is Taylor’s birthday. The FAA’s 2011 account gives his birth year as 1868. NBAA says the Wright brothers hired Taylor in 1901 and entrusted him with much of the work designing and building the engine that powered their first flight on December 17, 1903. He was a machinist and a significant contributor—not the sole designer or builder of the aircraft. NBAA’s history of aviation maintenance and the FAA’s account of Taylor explain the connection.

Why does aviation maintenance matter?
Aircraft depend on careful maintenance to remain safe and serviceable. Technicians perform specialized work behind the scenes, supporting the operation of aircraft that people and businesses rely on. In remarks on May 19, 2021, then-FAA Administrator Stephen M. Dickson said, “Aviation Maintenance Technicians make sure we have it,” and called them “unsung heroes who make it possible for people to safely fly and for us to have a vibrant aerospace system.” Those remarks describe the importance of the work, not a guarantee that any one inspection or maintenance action eliminates risk. Read Dickson’s FAA remarks.
How do people become aviation maintenance technicians?
Requirements depend on the country and regulator. In the United States, FAA mechanic certification is based on knowledge gained through training and experience, demonstrated through written, oral, and practical tests. Completing an FAA-approved Aviation Maintenance Technician School is one route; the FAA says coursework typically takes 18 to 24 months and covers areas including turbine engines, composite materials, and aviation electronics. These are U.S. FAA pathways, not universal licensing rules. Check the FAA’s current mechanic certification guidance and requirements for the applicable details.

Not every role described as aviation maintenance work necessarily requires the same certificate. NBAA’s May 2021 article quotes Greg Hamelink, then chairman of its Maintenance Committee and Stryker Corporation’s senior manager of flight operations and maintenance: “There is an amazing opportunity for avionics and IT- related technicians who may or may not have an A&P, as there are a growing number of AMT careers where IT-related skills are replacing what used to be a mechanically-driven skillset.” The quote points to changing skill needs; it should not be read as a substitute for checking the credential requirements of a specific job.
